Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

How bad was it?

I thought Tyndall was a great replacement
Oh yeah. So great that he is now in the Coaches Witness Protection Program. Last I heard he was coaching some junior college. No 4 year school has touched him since we canned him. It was an embarrassment that Dave Hart didn’t do his homework and hired the sleaze.

Tyndall went 2-7 in SEC home games. He was never going to do anything here and the NCAA did us a favor giving us an out to fire him for cause.

Is he cleared with the NCAA to be able to coach at one of their schools yet? Seems like he got a lengthy show cause?

A show cause does not mean he can’t be hired. Auburn hired Pearl before his show cause from UT expired. Dan Mullen got a show cause at Florida and they chose to keep him through it. Most schools just don’t want to deal with the hassle of going before the NCAA to plead with them to avoid sanctions. That’s why it turns into a de facto death penalty for a coach most of the time.

Tyndall’s first team wouldn’t have won ten games without Josh Richardson. Not all his fault mind you as he didn’t inherit a particularly strong team, but still…it likely would have been the worst season since the Wade Houston era without Richardson. Bottom line is Dave Hart didn’t do his homework and hired a guy who cheated carelessly on multiple occasions. Maybe Tyndall would have done okay had he not been so sleazy, but that’s something we will never know. As it is, his tenure was as mediocre as it was short.

Some of our fans are in for the rudest of rude awakenings when Barnes retires. Our March success is well-documented, but our entire history in March as a program is basically non-existent.

We (the fanbase) truly don’t have any idea how good we have it right now. People that can’t enjoy this success we are having now are going to be pining for Barnes when he leaves and we potentially go back to a Top 30-40 team instead of perennial Top 15 team. There is a higher probability the next guy is a bust than a Top 5-10 coach in basketball.
I'm not against Barnes by any means, but can offer constructive criticism when it calls for it. That being said, potentially is the key word. I think that whenever Barnes retire, with the success he's had at Tennessee, he'll likely have a say in the hiring process and he should... He deserves that much.

Not sure. Bio says he is the coach at Chipola JC. Maybe they aren’t covered by show cause. Would have thought his would have ended by now.

Lol, as if it’s a little bit if criticism that bothers us, and not the fact that certain posters’ post-per-minute goes through the ROOF at the first sign of adversity and they disappear when we beat Bama by 20.

That and all the “looks like Barnes is preparing us for the postseason early” kind of garbage is just a sad reflection on the portion of the fanbase that will also refuse to enjoy the incredible success that’s been built here.

Criticism is fine and a good thing, but to only criticize and never show up to praise the good is just a drag and makes it impossible for the criticism to be accepted at face value.
Yeah. This thread gets bumped everytime we get off to a bad start by the above mentioned and the easily offended take the bait and off we go. It's an endless cycle.

He is a very good game coach, and a good developer as well. His career here would have depended on his ability to recruit, but he was sound everywhere else.

16th coach with 800 wins.

Roster management now more resembles reloading than rebuilding.

UT is hitting ever higher levels with rankings. # of consecutive weeks ranked. Top 10 rankings. Top 5 rankings.

Yet there are fools that post in this thread after every loss or not impressive win that want him replaced. Where are the Legions of the Miserable tonight?

No one deserves a final four or championship more than CRB. Always a class act. Appears to be respected by his peers and loved by his players. Hoping this is his greatest season finish ever!

He's been to a final four
Yes he has and I detested Dan Wolken for suggesting THAT was a miracle..I unfortunately worked with 3 Ky fans when this article came out..I literally got into a fight with them and ended up suspended from my job for it..Stupid I guess but I'd do it again under the same circumstances..But I will ALWAYS detest Dan Wolken for writing that article....
