I'm not changing what I said, I'm explaining to you what I meant. If I didn't phrase it the best way, I apologize.

I literally did in the post you quoted. You can gauge how a teams season went MORE by where they finish in the regular season standings vs how they do in the conf tourney.
How did the season go? It went really well. It got better since I posted the thread. They didn't win the conf, however, but tied for 2nd.
Why would you gauge how well a team did for a season based off a tournament that.lasted only a couple of games vs the entire season?

One wouldn’t……….I’m not sure “anyone” is.

Playing more games, and winning more games, especially vs decent to good teams should only add to the success of a season.

Tennessee had a really good regular season, beat some really good teams, while having a nightmare schedule……then kept that going by winning the SEC tournament.

If you “believe” Tennessee had a good regular season and played a tough schedule……..I don’t understand why you would have even made this statement: “ I don't get the hype of getting hot for a few games and winning a tourney at the end of the year. Bad or avg teams win it all the time. Tenn didn't win the reg season which is way more telling to me.”


It’s not like you said: Tennessee had a really good season, but came up just one game short. That’s more telling than simply the tournament.

You basically said Tennessee didn’t win and that’s more telling……..when in actuality it’s not. They were the 2 seed because of what they did in the regular season…..they simply kept it going. Maybe……..just maybe it’s more telling of Auburn? They played the lighter schedule, and couldn’t keep it going.

I was 15 when they hired Pearl. That's when I started watching them. I'm 31 now so half my life I've watched regularly.
We didn't have cable, just local channels. My dad and I had to go to someone else's house to even watch Pearl games. I only had cable a few years. I have to go over to my dad's now to watch any sports.
I have church on Wed which is a lot of games.
They play a lot more games than football does and I'm a bigger football fan.
We watched and loved March madness prior to Pearl. That's because it was on the weekend and on CBS. We live outside of the area and can't get the teams radio broadcast.
But I'm sorry that I'm not as big of a fan as you are.

Semantics. You are trying to tell me that you brushed off the conference tournament as nothing, yet want to say it’s not insignificant.

The mindset of some of our fans is mind boggling. While you didn’t specifically say that Barnes didn’t earn his salary, that’s part of the equation on here. You truly haven’t been around if you don’t know that.

Just enjoy the ride of a coach who has totally changed the trajectory of our program when he got here and is actually putting hardware in our trophy case.

Again, you're putting words in my mouth. I never said it was insignificant. They haven't won it in 43 years. That's a huge deal. I'm saying it's not as big of a deal in general to tell how a teams season went as it is with the regular season standing (barring major injuries or something).
Im glad you admit I didn't say anything about him not early his salary. I don't care what others say. This thread is specifically about what I have said.
I've never made a thread on the basketball forum that I recall. The ONE time I do I even start off showing how much I like Barnes and hope he stays so people don't think I'm a "hater" and yet many on here say that I may be.
I've enjoyed much of the season as I have his tenure here. I was just getting frustrated from the same old issues that creep up under a Barnes team.
And I clearly never thought Barnes wasn't "good enough" because I have said in this thread that it's my own fault that I keep getting my hopes up. So you could say I thought he was better than he is.

This topic and thread have been merged several times because of the number of times it has been brought up- over and over again. You aren’t paying attention anymore if you don’t know about the salary argument.

Again, that’s a lot to spout off to say that you are disappointed. The lesson for everyone is that basketball is not like football. It’s a long season, and teams lose. But, they can improve. Barnes has never had a team that is this elite defensively. Enjoy.

You said it with clear implications, and you didn't answer my question. We finished one game behind the team that won the regular season championship, beat them head to head, and they had a much easier schedule than we did. So I ask again.....what does that tell you since you claim it's so telling?

Not true.

The SECT winner was the official champion from 1935-1950 but since 1979 the SEC Champion is the team(s) with the best regular season conference record with split championships recognized. SECT winner is Tournament Champion and receives an automatic bid to the NCAAT.

I’m sure this information is going to delight the anti-Barnes morons. Hope they enjoy. In addition to that $5 million contract that they like to whine about, Barnes just garnered a $400,000 bonus for finishing in the top 5 in the final AP poll. That makes a total of $800,000 in performance bonuses so far for this season. Here’s a fact for you goofs. Barnes and his $6.2 million payday (so far this year) don’t give two steaming 💩’s about your opinions. And neither does 99.9% of Vol Nation. Sure they probably aren’t winning a Natty. Staying hot for 6 straight is difficult. But I like our chances as good as any other team. And you are a fool if you don’t believe Barnes has built something here that we haven’t seen before. In the words of that great American Ric Flair: “You may not like it but you need to learn to live with it cause it’s the best thing going! Woooo!”

Because they wouldn't have won the tournament without the success they had in the regular season. They were seeded #2 in the tournament based on their accomplishments in the reg season, and hence achieved a double bye. They took care of businees three straight days and got the title. They wouldn't have done that if they had finished 5th in the regular season.
