I like him now right where he is at. Don't dislike the guy. He coached at a local University where I live. Just don't think he can maintain or build upon the program we have now.

People think he hasent been offerd other jobs. It's well known here in nashville that he has but has told search commitees no before his name went public. He has been very commited to Belmont and if we pry him away it would be bigger than some realize.

I believe he can coach, but I don't know if he can recruit. There are more question marks surrounding him than some other guys.

I say yes, I didn't know if Pearl could recruit either. His background at UWM didn't exactly have NBA players all over it

Byrd lacks the dynamic flair and zeal that our program needs right now.

If you want more Buzzball or Wade Houston basketball, then you hire Byrd.

If you want to build on top of the foundation that Bruce Pearl built, then you hire someone with a more dynamic swagger and experience in recruiting top notch players. Byrd lacks the recruiting gravitas needed at UT.

wrong. Byrd is a way better coach than buzz or wade ever wished to be.

Byrd would be in the Bo Ryan mold, and there is nothing wrong with going that route. Remember, Ryan had 0 bigtime recruiting experience before getting the UW job. And even now, he simply finds 4 year kids that fit his system.

Depending on who he hires as assistants will make recruiting more or less effective right?

A +++ hire...if you've watched his teams play us

you have seen the product first hand...Christian

collage coach with a limited enrollment and recruiting...

Would be a great investment with immediate dividends...

Tactician, Disciplinarian, Integrity and Vested in his kids...

but that's an old mans opinion...lol

Byrd will not be as flashy as Bruce, but recruits will see an honest passion for Tennessee that will make up the difference. Who knows what his system will look like when he has the kind ofplayers that we can recruit. Plus, we might see a couple of things we haven't see for awhile; passing consistently and MAKING FREE THROWS!!!

I would be fine with this IF all of the assistants were big time proven recruiters.

If, for some reason, UT chooses or offers the coaching position to Byrd, it will tell me more than I want to know about the state of Basketball at UT. And this is not a criticism of Byrd's coaching abilities.

If he wants in on Hammy-Nation, then I'd welcome him. Like his approach to the game and I think he could do for us what Bo Ryan has done for Wisconsin after spending years coaching at smaller programs.

This. The UW comparisons are intriguing. The arguments being made here against Byrd were made against both Bo Ryan and Dick Bennett. In fact, UW passed on Bennett twice when he was the natural pick, having been very successful at two smaller state schools. They went with a couple of "sexier" NBA hires in Stu Jackson and Stan Van Gundy who did nothing to change Wisconsin's big 10 bottom feeder status. When Pat Richter finally hired Bennett the third time around, he led them to one more final four than we have ever been to. And Bo Ryan's run over the last 10 years has been simply phenomenal.

Byrd looks to be a hire much in the same vein as the last two UW hires. Can he recruit at the highest level? Maybe. But his sustained success and reputation in coaching circles are very appealing and I'd sure love to give him a chance. We don't need a snake oil salesman. We need a great basketball coach--and Byrd certainly is that.

That's so silly. So in other words our administration having an ability to judge coaching talent instead of hiring someone just because their already a "big" name will tell you all you need to know? Wow. If its that easy than even you could do it. I think Hamilton has the ability to find good talent, he just has to learn to judge character better and Rick Byrd has a ton of both.

Byrd is the safe hire, but to be completely honest, I don't think that is necessarily a bad idea at this point. Basketball is different than football, in that you have a VERY limited number of guys you can play, and if they are all bought into the system, you can win at virtually any level. The problem with bringing in a guy like Byrd, is the fact that he's not going to pander to anyone, and with the politics behind the scenes, that might not be a good fit. Other than that, it's hard to find a coach that coaches fundamentals as well as he does.
