Riley was recruited over by Jones and he did not like it all and sounded pretty negative about it on signing day..The film of Jones Jumping up and down when they got Dobbs probably did not help...If Jones had at least been straight with this kid it might have worked out different....I would think Jones has learned as much from this deal as anyone..
I believe Jones WAS straight with RF. As we have heard over and over, competition will be created at every position. That happens on every good team. When Peyton Manning came to Tennessee, so did Brandon Stewart. Peyton got it, why not Ferguson?
I would like every last player who signs to get game opportunities. They have to earn it through hard work in practice and the film room. And if what Eric Ainge is reporting is true, Ferguson did not do what it took to earn the spot, but was given opportunities in practice. In the O&W game, he didn't perform like the guy everyone wanted to see. And though he might have had the best arm of the four, he didn't put in the work this off-season to win the job.
As far as you thinking Jones "has learned as much from this deal as anyone", it just reinforced what he already knows; to learn everything he can about a player's attitude, toughness, work ethic, & character before he accepts his LOI. In Ferguson's case, he didn't really get that chance.
Some recruits are going to be misses. Some can't make grades, some get injured and stay injured & some get homesick. What I find unacceptable is when the player doesn't do the work it takes to start, and leaves because the position isn't simply awarded to him. For all the hope we had in Ferguson, he might have made Peterman's start vs Florida look like an all pro.
