Riley Ferguson Update

VFL34 needs to understand not everybody has the same heart and guts he had, which makes a difference between men and boys quite often.

That's not a shot at RF. It applies to many.

We are also dealing with a different generation of kids. Whether it's entitlement or whatever label you call it this gen of kids wants it now and don't want to wait. And if they don't get it they throw a fit and leave. Some people have to experience life slapping them in the face as opposed to being lectured about it. Young people don't want to be lectured any more because they've got it all figured out. And if they don't they google it and believe it. It's a shame.

In other words, as of Saturday night, I think chances of Ferguson's return have crossed threshold from very unlikely to no chance.

Preaching to the choir. Instead of running into obstacles and working thru them, too many people today just quit. It's epidemic. You can't tell me #34 isn't a better man today because he handled his business and took advantage of an opportunity he worked for and earned when he was younger. Well, I guess he could, but I bet getting over hurdles instead of running the other direction like the Fla safety on that little juke helped mold his character as he went from college kid to a man.

Sounds like the tough love approach.

If he wants back in at UT, he's going to have to learn humility really quickly and be willing to go in with his hat in hand. Not an easy task for someone to do at 19 and was heavily recruited while in high school.

You will go out of your way to bash CBJ.

Riley told CBJ he wasn't coming back, so CBJ relayed that message to the fanbase. If Riley wants to talk about it, obviously coach is willing to talk to him. Jones did't want him off the team, in the first place.

Jones did the smart thing and addressed it quickly, rather than doing absolutely nothing and continue to let it be the elephant in the room.

Again...until it's final FINAL before he goes yapping it to the media. Why couldn't there have been a simple press release?? Instead of the type of article Ainge wrote?? Again, reading Ainge's article, to me, was a reflection of how he was told about the the situation. CBJ has been a hot mess when it comes to "letting the fans know". Did it with the Pig situation etc. He seems to be forcing the hand of these kids by "letting the fans know". Some things need to be kept in house bud, and a simple press release gets the job done.

I'm not finding things to bash CBJ with bud. I'm just seeing a trend that I'm starting to get concerned about. U may like to know all the little "in-house" stuff, but I don't. Mainly cause I think some things need to stay IN HOUSE...simple. These kids deserve the right to make their moves without The Legion of the Miserable coming after them...CBJ doesn't have that right.

Sounds like its final. Also sounds like this was Riley's call. No need to get butthurt about it. It isn't like anyone is paying you 3 million this year to make those decisions but if they were you'd have all the info and make the decisions you felt were in the best interest of the program. I wish Riley the best but to say the CBJ didn't do or say the right thing(s) without having all the facts is finding something in your own mind to bash CBJ on. Just saying :whistling:

Doesn't Butch Jones realize that he's the best option to lead UT?...at least according to the braintrust on VN!

The fact is that you're still bitter that your man Dooley was a terrible coach, and that Jones is bringing in the talent needed to get the job done. Get over it dude.

He is not the best option to lead UT if he is not putting in the effort and time to do it CBJ's way. You either do it the coach's way or you get replaced. Simple.

You know, I almost transferred, but was motivated even harder to work my butt off to start my senior year. Coach fulmer gave me his word I would have the opportunity to have a chance to start. And start I did.....My difference was I was behind two pro bowlers. It was hard to get limited carries for a few years, but you sacrifice if you love your team, and I loved my team, so I eventually redshirted so I didn't waste a year..Bottom line is, you have to put in work no matter how talented you are. The rest for me is in the record books. I wish Riley the best, but no matter where he goes he has to put in that work and sometimes make sacrifices that you don't want, such as redshirts.

You are the man!
Just want to thank you for all you gave to Tennessee.

I agree that Butch is to blame for Ainge's article and that Butch should never disclose the inner workings of the team to the media. If he'd just ignored the problem and avoided confronting it, then maybe everything would've turned out ok. o_O

You are exactly right DG, I see it quite often where I work. Most of the new generation has a pretty poor work ethic and have a hard time being told they aren't allowed to do certain things.

Rule no. 1 don't negotiate with terrorist.

CBJ is in a catch 22.

If he doesn't disclose it everybody assumes more to it and if he does disclose information then we have what we got.

I say get it out in the open versus put it on the shoulders of responsibility where it belongs, when you don't you get a bunch of he said, she said, or people pointing fingers at each other accounting for blame.

Quoting for the guys arguing that Butch should have made sure before talking about it.

He was sure, which is why he said it. That was final. No more I'm not sure, let me think about it., etc.

did you ever stop and think that maybe Ainge was covering his own arse for all that false reporting he was doing on Riley? as i stated during those spring practices, he was leading the Riley fan club on because that's what they wanted to hear/ read. Some folk wanted RF to start due to him being the only one fans haven't seen live yet and others due to race combined with Worley and Peterson already having their chance. Ainge just gained ratings by playing to this crowd, which was loud and proud and seemed like the majority.

Or maybe, just maybe, he knew from practicing with him everyday that Dobbs was better. And that there were looming 5 stars he would have to compete with after Dobbs graduated. And he simply made the best decision for him.

Dobbs is better... I know VolNation doesn't want to believe that. But there is a lot of evidence to support that conclusion.

a whole lot of evidence supporting this!

Bottom Line: We will never know...If Dobbs is successful in the years to come then it can be assumed to support this.

Fergie decided not to hang around and prove it wrong. Maybe he knew above and wanted to play more. We have kids that want to be here and kids buy into Jones, the University, and the Fan Base. Tradition, yea, the SEC, eeh!

In today's media cycle, it is an invaluable commodity to get out in front of a story.

You're right, it's a catch 22. Butch can either break (and spin) the story, or appear to the fans as either hiding facts or being blindsided. Some will bash him for either, but at least with the first option you can appear to be in the know and that smacks of competence.

The best option, hands down, is to be the one telling the story, not the one defending yourself from the media when they spring a story on you.

no, we already know. otherwise, he stays around and competes next year for the position. Riley was 4th best in the spring,, period. The kid went from possibly tied for 2nd going into spring and as a fan favorite to 4th string coming out. he clearly understood this and made his mind up. the staff knew this as well.
