That pretty much was their best chance, yes. Especially since they came into the game ranked number 3 but were pretty much an afterthought before the game even started.

They had other chances other years, but that was easily the best one.

Similar to 2001 when UT was an afterthought going into the UF game. Once they won, they were in the driver's seat to play UM.

Richt had some short falls. He was missing a NC. But Vince only had one. Maybe it was shared? Other than that, you just fired the most successful coach in school history in every other category other than a lone NC. When the media asked Vince what Type of coach GA should look for, he responded by saying Richt would be a good start. That ended the Q&A very quickly. But hey, you got a good DC for your head coach. I'm sure the next regime won't graduate 90% of your players. Probably won't keep up the organization Richt founded to help players transition to the real world after playing either. Or continue to see that the Southern player that was hurt in his stadium is still looked after. None of that is worth losing over the lack of one Title when you still average roughly 10 wins a year. I seriously doubt Kirby ever does any better.
