RIP Twitter

The argument should be over whether or not Twitter will become even more restrictive under Musk, with more tweets deleted and more users banned for failing to abide by the terms of service.

I think we can see, through how sensitive Musk appears to be to criticism, that will indeed be the case. I agree it has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. He can run the platform however he damn well pleases, and ban anyone who doesn't kiss his butt. That's fine. It's just not consistent with what we've been hearing from Republicans/Conservatives regarding the future of Twitter under his control.

I don't think Twitter will be more restrictive in the long run. Short term, yes it will. Musk will have to get consistent on his policies and enforce them equally-which was not done previously to his buying Twitter. No one has to kiss his butt, you are free not to use Twitter. If you continue to use Twitter, you have to realize that the new rules in place may change frequently until Musk and his team get settled in. He is looking at this mostly from a business standpoint. That means you take the hits in the short-term (loss of users and advertisers) so that you can fix the long- term issues that company had. He has already eliminated a substantial portion of employees that were redundant or never needed at all. It is also apparent that he believes in the philosophy that no press is bad press. I believe he thinks this philosophy brings in more users or keep the ones threatening to leave to stay even if that means just to stay and argue with him. I don't think he cares one way or another what liberals or conservatives want from his platform. As long as he allows those groups to continue fighting and talking bad about each other (within limits) his company will grow. It is all about the bottom line.

Which also means he needs to keep both sides of the aisle on Twitter or he’ll end up with another Truth Social. I don’t think it’ll be a problem for him but he has different incentives than the “LOL the libs are leaving” crowd

I agree completely. You can't eliminate more than half of your user base and survive as a company. No intelligent businessperson would do that.

That's a continuation of the already existing problem. Twitter did not become overwhelmed by toxic political discourse until the 2016 Presidential Election. He has not signaled an intention to move away from that. It's just a junk platform for name-calling.

Unfortunately, toxic political discourse did not start with Twitter. If it had, I would be more than happy to see it just go away. We do not debate things anymore. We scream at each other with our viewpoints and insist we are always correct. This goes for both sides of the political aisle. This is perfect for the limited character world of Twitter.

From a business point of view, why would Musk move away from that when it drives so much traffic to his site?

I think it repels more traffic than it brings. Sure, you have more bots due to the toxic political atmosphere ... but that isn't genuine traffic. Twitter was not always like this.

I will have to take your word on that. I only use Twitter to find news not covered in the press here in the U.S., news in localities where I used to live, and of course to vote for VOL players and teams.

Like with anything else, we can only speak to our own personal experiences .... When I joined Twitter in April of 2011, it was mostly discussion of entertainment and sports. I started watching Game of Thrones because of great reviews I was reading on Twitter at the time .... and the Hatfield & McCoys mini-series a year later. There wasn't as much of the childish political banter.

Like I said, that's my experience. If yours was different? Cool.

Would they delete a tweet from Donald Trump, if he posted content from Truth Social?

... I don't think so either.

Again, how hard is this to understand? If Trump tweeted "Hey come see me on Truth", Musk would have every right to delete it. If he just posted something newsworthy it should be fine. If he reposted a 12-hour old message from Truth, that's up to the company to decide if they should allow it on their platform.

Some of you are so eaten up with hostility, anger, and jealousy that you can no longer use common sense.

My point was that if it was Trump? It wouldn't be deleted.

For years, conservatives have complained about the selective enforcement of the terms of service on Twitter. I'm contending that the only thing which will change under Musk, is who is being targeted for this selective enforcement. It was once conservatives ... now it will be liberals.

I will give you another theory to ponder. Maybe, just maybe Liberals are now having to play by the same rules as everyone else on Twitter and they don't like it. Did you ever think of that?

Is Elon getting his marching orders from the government? Thats the big difference and nobody from the left wants to address that point. Sure…private company can do what a private company wants. But previous Twitter was bending to the whims of the government choosing what was “right” or “wrong.” Is Elon?? Or is he just acting independently and forcing the issue?
