Rob Lewis on Aidoo

On defense, several times he moved high to help out, and waited too late to move back down on Edey. JP did a better job of paying attention and getting down low before Edey, to keep him farther from the basket when he got his passes.

I really think that a little better inside game on both ends could have won this one today.
Just way to slow reacting and moving his feet the last two games IMO

Got into a discussion over it with another poster in the Creighton live thread who disagreed.

Had high hopes for Jonas when he came here. Never figured him for a Powder Puff which he has turned into when playing against the legit Bigs. Would excell at ETSU or another mid major. Hit the Portal Hard for a dominant big to play with Tobe and Estrella next season.

I said this ITOT. Aidoo is our best big man when the other team doesn't have a guy who can push him around. It's a matchup thing. He can't do anything about the fact that his ass is not big. But he's a problem for most opponents who do not have a guy who can put him under the basket. He averages more stocks than Awaka and Estrella combined, per minute, and he also commits half as many fouls as each of them individually (per minute). He is a big reason why we had a top D. Do not chase this man off, VN. This is basketball IQ test.

Aidoo isn't strong enough to guard dominant bigs but he is our best help and rim defender by a mile. Fans shouldn't be too hard on him. He's not built for certain opponents and I think it's weird he started this game (no shade at Barnes, tho).

I don't understand why he took so many shots early in this huge game. He is a low percentage jump shot shooter. His job in this game was just to keep LURCH from getting to his spot and get some rebounds. He didn't return because he was playing soft.

He gets baited into taking those. Needs to learn that there is a reason teams leave him open from outside of seven feet.

Seems like we’d be set with Awaka and Estrella next year.

Do you seriously think we are set with Awaka and Estrella? Estrella has done nothing besides help push Edey out the paint that gives anyone confidence that the C position is all set. Even then Edey still was dominating. I would've liked to have seen some mid range jumpers.

The freshman still out played him
So we’re just going to compare a 10 minute stretch in a single game this season? Also, what exactly did JP do that was so much more impressive? Scored 2 more points and had 1 less rebound? Edey got what he wanted against everyone today. Neither guy was impressive today although JP was surprisingly not as terrible as expected. Got to look at a larger sample size IMO

no one expected him to out play Edey but OTOH no one expected him to completely disappear either.

"I don’t ever delight in being critical of college athletes, but man, Tennessee needed more from Jonas Aidoo than the Vols got today.

His development this season has been a huge key to Tennessee’s success, and the Vols were going to need him to be a factor today against Edey.

Aidoo was scoreless going 0-for-3 from the floor. He grabbed three rebounds in 10 minutes of play and after he picked up third foul with 16:59 left. Barnes had apparently seen enough. He didn’t play Aidoo the rest of the way, opting to go with Estrella.

The fact that Barnes sat Aidoo, the team’s third leading scorer, for 16:59 in the second half of an Elite Eight game is significant."

3 out of the last 4 years we have been destroyed by the other teams big man in the Tourney; Roman Silva of Oregon State , Gordon Dickinson of Michigan and Edey this year. Barnes has done a great job of recrruitiing wings and PGs but has never gotten the aircraft carrier in the middle.
You didn't mention all the passes he muffed or his failed attempts to put the ball on the floor.

It was a rough game for Aidoo, but this is consistent with how he has performed against 7ft+ bigs. On the other hand he has produced really well against guys smaller than him.

Please lets not over react. Especially to Estrella's few good minutes. JP has potential, but also has looked lost for many stretches this season. Aidoo is our guy. He just needs to hit the gym. This is a hard learned lesson. But hopefully it motivates him to take the next step.

I want to see what Cade Phillips game develops into.
Probably needs another year before he's ready to be a day to day guy. No faith in Aidoo. Awaka can't be trusted due to the fouling. Estrella might be ready to help a lot next year....might. I think we need a physical big from the portal to start or at least push Aidoo for the starting job next year. If Aidoo bolts, so be it.

Need to have Aidoo and Awaka on the court at the same time a lot next season. If the Vols get good guard play those two could be a major force on court together

That one and done SEC Tourney game against Miss State Aidoo had only 5 pts in 26 mins of play. I'm wondering if he is suffering from an injury or has he just checked out.

Yep, this quote from Mashack, who appears to be Aidoo's closest buddy on the team, screams of players being checked out...

"I'm extremely proud of this team. They've given everything they could. Every player on this team gave their all to the team. I think that's all you can ask for. And the way we went down, we went down fighting, for sure. We went down doing whatever we could in order to win, despite what the result was. You can say what you want about us, man, but we did everything we could to win.

"Everybody in here did everything they could to win. Whether you disagree with what moves we made or what, we did everything we could to win. I think that's something people have to realize when they're talking about teams and criticizing teams and what they should or shouldn't do. We did everything we could to win the game. That's all that matters. So regardless of what happened … it happened. We're here now.

"Now we just have to stop thinking about it. It's just hard to."

Bingo, OP. Since Grant Williams left, we have had a glaring piece of the puzzle missing.
And with Grant they didn't make the FF either. When you see the champ teams be so dominate like Purdue and Uconn... I wonder if Tenn can truly ever get there. Barnes only has a few years left. Can we realistically expect a better (or luckier) coach after him?

I know he had a rough few games but we wouldn’t be here without Aidoo just in the Texas game alone much less the season as a whole. I also agree he looked disinterested, shell shocked, nervous, and maybe all of these things last couple of games. I also know he took 3 HARD falls in the Texas game, one where he definitely hit his head, so I wonder if he is hurt or under the weather.
I like the kid and hope he is a Vol for his entire career.

While I understand criticism of Aidoo, to not want him back and saying he should be at a mid major is silly. Aidoo did a lot of terrific things for us. Great Blocker, gets boards, etc. He needs to get his confidence up and play more aggressive. Probably needs to hit the gym more to gain strength.

We have seen him play good bball

I feel like there has been perhaps something going on with him lately. Just seems different. Either way, not going to throw him under the bus - he helped us get there.

Jonas needs to spend the entire off season developing an 8-12 foot jumper. If he can push himself to shoot thousands of those shots over the next several months, he could be deadly.

Not sure what was up the last couple of games, but he seemed to have lost a half step. Seemed timid and somewhat intimidated.

Imagine having Awaka in the paint and Aidoo kind of like a hybrid low post wing player with a jump shot....

In this day and age, it would suck, but I could see him transferring. I hope he is the dedicated person I think he is.
You know, until the last few games Aidoo's short and midrange shooting was good. For some reason he was short arming everything this week. He'll get it back and will contribute a lot next year.
