Robert Hubbs

Since we're all throwing out pointless comparisons, someone please humor me. I have three recent, underclass stars with relatively similar builds / skill sets to Hubbs that played in the SEC and had a good amount of success:

Bradley Beal
Rodney Hood
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

How does Hubbs' game compare to these guys'?

IMO Beal and Hood were the best as Freshmen, with Beal obviously being a top draft pick after his Freshman season. I think Hood could've been a mid/late round pick had he decided to delcare. Pope came on in his second season. What will we see from Hubbs?

Because of our roster build, I don't think you'll see Hubbs averaging 35mpg and 17ppg as a freshman. You have the best returning wing in the SEC in Jordan McRae who will likely be preseason first team all-SEC and a contender for preseason POY. You have martins go to guy josh Richardson at the other wing spot who had a nice improvement from freshman to sophomore year...both are upperclassmen.

It's gonna be hard for a freshman to come in and play monster minutes and put up a bunch of shots. I do think (depending on Maymon) Hubbs will see 25-30 mpg and average around 10ppg. Next year he will slide into McRae's spot and be the go to guy offensively and average 15+ppg

Agree with BTO. Due to the roster make-up, I see a path more similar to that of KCP than Beal or Hood.

He will get his feet wet as a freshman and contribute somewhere between 20-25 minutes and 8-10 ppg. He'll then take over for McRae as a sophomore and should see a significant rise in his minutes and ppg average.

This will be to his benefit as it allows him to adjust to the college game at a slower pace and get stronger.

These guys have said it already. He will probably have a game or two where he just absolutely goes off, similar to how McRae or Hopson would, but don't look for him to be averaging even 12ppg with this team's make up. If he does then he's either a first round pick, someone got hurt, or we suck much worse than we ever imagined.

bingo

I honestly hope Hubbs lives up to you guys expectations being that he hasn't played one collegiate game yet, i fear that after the first bad game this board will go into full panic mode.

“Coach Martin came on strong early, told us that Robert was the only shooting guard he was recruiting,” McCord said. “That meant a lot to Robert. Coach Martin got in early and developed a good relationship. I think Robert felt the right fit with them. It’s a program on the upswing, and I think he felt that excitement.”

This is one area of concern for me with CCM. We seen what happened with Nichols and not going after other posts that would have came to UT. I don't like the "all the eggs in one basket" recruiting. You got to have a back up plan.

2014 class should be a good barometer of his recruiting abilities

Exactly. He's a freshman.

I don't think the expectations given since Manny posed the question are unreasonable or even optimistic. I think they are very possible and easily approachable numbers for a top-15 player. He's not a rookie trying to eek out PT for the Miami Heat. He is joining a team that has failed to make the NCAA tourney two years running. Minutes won't be impossible to come by, and with a reputation as a scorer, 8 ppg isn't some astronomical figure.

Sure, the usual quacks will show their @sses when Hubbs doesn't put up 30 in his debut, or when he shows the typical freshman adjustment pains. We expect that round here.

I remember seeing a quote from Hubbs and he was talking about his goals and one was to be SEC Freshman of the year. I'm sure that trophy will be going to someone in blue, but ALL SEC Freshman team would be feasible.
