Romney in London

Had it been Obama that made these missteps you'd be incredulous at the amateurism.

Most of the stuff is silliness. Of course had Obama made the statements, we'd have threads denouncing how anyone in the Oval Office could be such an idiot.

Nothing new here.

Romney is an amazing man.... he has already evolved on this issue.......

USA Today:

Mitt Romney moved today to get past the uproar he created in London, telling NBC News that he's "absolutely convinced" Great Britain is ready to host the Summer Olympics.

"After being here a couple of days it looks to me like London is ready," Romney said on NBC's Today show this morning. "What they've done that I find so impressive is they took the venues and put them right in the city."

I would expect him to say that. I am not critical of the walk back.

W would not have back down. He may have insulted them but he would stick to his guns and probably say something to insult them a little more.

Romney nor Obama has the backbone to stand on their convictions.

Sorry. Forgot you don't watch actual news.

Cliffs: in interview criticized London prep for games. Not harshly by any means. But in London just idiocy to say anything negative about it.

Forgot name of official he met with.

Looked terrible, fake, stiff, walking around.

Mentioned secret meeting with head of MI 6. To the press.

He has been roundly mocked by British press, prime minister, and Mayor of London.

Very insightful - changes my mind. No way this guy should be POTUS

Oh the outrage - what a complete bastage

The more critical remarks took hold, in part, because Romney has been so painstakingly careful not to criticize President Obama or his policies while overseas that he has made no other news. After meeting with Cameron — who did not mention the flap, according to a senior Romney advisor — the Republican candidate was so cautious in his responses that he declined even to restate his own position when asked whether the U.S. and Europe should get more directly involved in Syria.

Though Romney said he and Cameron spoke at length about Syria and other nations, he said that in keeping with tradition, he didn't "want to refer to any comments made by leaders representing other nations, nor do I want to describe foreign policy positions I might have while I'm on foreign soil."

"Discussions of foreign policy should be made by the president and the current administration, not by those that are seeking office," he said, in an unusually deferential bow to his rival. "I really am not going add anything about my own views on Syria.… I can only say that I appreciated the insights and perspectives of the leaders of the government here and opposition here as well as the head of MI6."

(Soon the British press was debating whether Romney should have revealed that he'd met with the head of British intelligence.)

Secret meeting eh?

The guy goes out of his way to be deferential to the sitting POTUS and gets hammered by his critics for it.

They were small gaffes and let's not forget the British media loves stirring the pot.

LG is so predictable it's pretty funny.

The fun thing is Cameron in response saying, well, it's tougher to run them in a busy place like London than in the middle of nowhere. And now Utah officials bristling at that.

So Cameron's comment is worse than Romney's. Romney shouldn't have said anything but what he did say had been said for weeks by people in Britain. Cameron took an intentional shot.

not very hard since all he had to do was not bow to Cameron and he is ahead

President Dwight Eisenhower bowed to French President Charles De Gaulle in 1959.

Anyone remember that President Richard Nixon bowed to the Emperor of Japan Hirohito?

One doesn’t have to go much farther than George W. Bush to see that a U.S. president does, in fact, hold hands

Even President Ronald Reagan bowed when appropriate

Let's see, Obama returned the Churchill bust to British his first day in office, wasn't that a direct slap in the face? (rumor has it that he replaced it with a bust of Malcolm X.)

Then there is the stupid ipod moment and the toast to the Queen during the playing of the British national anthem, how embarrassing was that?

Then Moochelle broke almost every protocol when visiting the Queen, don't these people have someone on staff to brief them on proper behavior or do they just not even care?

This thread started nearly 12 hours ago, so while we were arguing whether the POTUS or the challenger is the bigger buffoon, the national debt increased by $2B. Congratulations! We're all stupid.

We need to start with congress and the senate. There lies the bigger problem.
Congress has terrible numbers but people think their congressperson/ senator is doing a great job and votes the same ole people back in office.

IMO. we need to clean house in Washington, vote for their opponent. They can't be worse than the group in there now.

We are given te choice to vote for te lesser of two evils for POTUS. we should vote against te evil in congress

Found this article on how the British media treated several gaffes and faux pas by Obama. Needless to say it's a bit different than the Romney treatment.

Selective Outrage: How The U.K. Press Reacted To Obama’s Numerous Anti-British Gaffes | Mediaite

The media always gives Obama a pass.
Romney's tour did not accomplish what it set out to do. It was all intended to demonstrate he was ready to handle foreign affairs and he failed miserably.

Obama and W both failed to take an etiquette lesson.
Romney insulted England.
These are different situations. The Prime Minister of England and the Mayor of London were both throwing shots at Romney.
Doing a toast at the wrong time or winking at the queen is not insulting a nation that has worked 7 years to put an event on.

Romney insulted England.

how? All he did was reiterate concerns that had been reported for weeks. Just because something is may be the truth doesn't make it an insult. They're continuing to struggle to put on the Olympics is a proper manner outside of the security issues.

The Prime Minister of England and the Mayor of London*both took it to be an insult.
Romney as usual changed his mind and starting praising England.

so what? Thin-skinned Brits should be the least of a US candidate's worries. Maybe they should do better if they don't want to be "insulted"

Someone wanting to be the leader of the free world should have enough common sense to realize you do not go to a friends home and insult it.

Romney doing another flipflop in less than 24 hours it the issue , imo.
How can he say today they are unprepared and tomorrow they are putting on a great event?
