I think it is more about Rand than Ron.(IMO) When reporters asked Rand Paul, a Tea Party favorite, what his response would be if Romney approached him with the offer of VP, he hardly poured cold water on the idea.

“I don’t know if I can answer that question, but I can say it would be an honor to be considered,” said Senator Paul.
Rand Paul Says ‘It Would Be An Honor’ if Romney Asked Him to Be VP

“Any Republican should be looking at Rand Paul as a potential running mate, because he’s the smartest guy in the room. And he has tremendous credibility with conservatives. Any Republican should have Rand Paul on his short list,” said Paul’s national campaign chairman, Jesse Benton.

Paul would never be willing to compromise and support another candidates views that he didn't agree with. That won't work as a VP.

The ticket just wouldn't make any sense. The base would roll their eyes.

they might roll their eyes, but 100% of them would still vote for the ticket. That's all that matters.

There's no doubt that ticket would take down Obama

I agree it is weird, and people would roll their eyes, but the important thing is how would the votes go? I'm not so sure this isn't the best option for Romney's chances.
