It is getting close, Romney will be picking his running mate in the next few days..

Who will he choose?

I think it will be Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.
Portman might help Romney win Ohio, and if Romney does not win Ohio, he will not win the presidency.

He is 56 years old, has a good resume, served as White House Counsel for Bush I, 12 years in Congress and was elected to the Senate in 2010.

He is someone that could step in as POTUS.

I had thought it may be Nikki Haley but she has a speaking role at the convention, I think that would exclude her.

What say ye VN ?

I think you're probably right about Portman. He might try to make a big splash and pick Rubio, but Rubio has some question marks that aren't helpful.

Portman or Pawlenty but I think the nod goes to Portman. I think the Palin lesson is do no harm. Portman is legit.

Left will argue it's a couple white guys but they sure loved Clinton/Gore.

Romney doesn't come across as a "big splash" guy.
I think he will make a safe call on this but strange things happen in the world of politics.

Romney - Portman, Obama - Biden

If I could vote for one of these four for POTUS, it would be Portman.

If I were a conservative Republican I'd want Jeff Flake for VP. That guy is pretty much exactly what a conservative is supposed to be. Much more so than Paul Ryan and Chris Christie, IMO.

I'm thinking Portman or Pawlenty. Romney is not going to reach.

I think if he plays it safe, it will be Pawlenty. If he tries to get someone exciting it will be Rubio.

I don't understand how Portman isn't toxic with Bush Office of Management and Budget next to his name.

Alex Waggner on The Last Word last night brought up an interesting tidbit. She was talking about how the VP nominee (in the internet era) has had quite a bit of changes to their Wiki page right before they are officially nominated.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman has had well over 100 in the last 24 hours. Interesting.

That is very interesting, but I'm not sure how relevant that information is. Wikipedia barely had 500,000 English articles in 2004 (granted, that's a ton, but nothing compared to the number today) and wasn't nearly the mainstream site it was in 2008, let alone now. Sort of seems like they're going off of data for one election year, and Palin probably had a lot of edits made on her page because information about her was still freshly emanating.

Colbert noted that last night and urged people to go on Wiki and relentlessly edit the pages for all the potential VP picks.

I hope it's Paul Ryan.

Speaking of Portman. I met him once when he came to a friend of mine's cookout and filmed us for a campaign ad for his Senate run. It was a voiceover and so they just filmed him talking to us, and we had to pretty much nod and smile. Anyway, I talked to him for a little while afterwards, and he was a real nice guy, but had a weak handshake. TIFWIW

I've been hearing Rubio, who knows. Rubio in my mind would be the best choice. They've already got Romney painted as a boring white guy, like that matters. I guess it does. Pairing him with another perceived boring white guy probably does nothing for him, other than give him better chance in Ohio. There are 56 other states though according to Obama.

Who have you been hearing that from?

you just happen to be the only one to believe it's a walkover in FL if he chooses another VP.

Never said that.

But consider:

1. Florida hit hard by mortgage mess. And Romney is easily portrayed as high finance, which is not good around here these days.

2. Florida elected a tea party governor, Rick Scott, who has been VERY unpopular. Approval ratings in the 20s. Scott made millions off of Columbia health care, which got nailed for fraud to the tune of billions. As is, come October, Obama can run ads linking the two as 1 percent scammers joined at the hip. Rubio lets Romney run counter ads and would be powerful.
