Roster Management: needs and room

Miles Campbell has entered the portal.

I just shake my head at these kids.

Julian Nixon- the other grossly talented TE that came in with Campbell- went to Butley CC this season and caught one pass AS A Tight End...for 9 freaking yards.
Now Fant is finally leaving and you decide to leave when it's your time???

Just stupid...stupid kids.

Jimmy Calloway and Holiday I understand, and both not for the same reason.

We'll probably never hear of this kid again.

Maybe this should go in the football forum, but I thought it was appropriate here to discuss what we have room/needs for in the transfer portal. Here's what I have for next year's scholarship numbers. I'm doing some projecting here, but this is as close as I can get right now. Don't pay much attention to the order of depth. I'm just sort of playing with it right now. We'll obviously have a better idea after spring ball as to where guys stand depth-wise. With a few exceptions, I just threw freshmen at the bottom of the depth chart.

77 on scholarship (79 with projected additions)

Notes:

1) This roster and coinciding numbers account for some projected departures of guys with eligibility remaining who I'm not counting in the above numbers:: Amari McNeil, Jeremy Banks (NFL), Jalin Hyatt (NFL), Jaylen McCollough, William Parker, Miles Campbell. These are guys I think will move on for different reasons. Kwauze Garland or RJ Perry may be other ones, not sure...but I counted those two in the numbers for now.

2) The two names in italics, Elijah Davis and Arion Carter, are projected commitments. Obviously, Carter will be a tough pull, but I added he and Davis just to account for them if needed.

3) Do we have 85 to give? Did we reduce those with our self-imposed sanctions?

4) I didn't count Carver, Salensky, or Ross as scholarship guys because they're walk-ons. Have any of them earned scholarships?

If these numbers hold up, we have room for 7 portal additions. If Warren comes back, we only have room for 6, but I suspect that would mean UT would only take 1 TE transfer instead of 2. We may have 1 or 2 more (or less) leave than I project and we may not land one or both of Davis and Carter. But I suspect the numbers will be close to this.

I would break down the needs/takes from the portal as follows:

1 QB (only if it's a big fish like Hudson Card)
1 WR
1 OT
2 TE (1 if Warren returns)
1 CB
1 S

If we don't land a QB (or if more than I project leave, like Garland or Perry, or we don't land Carter and or Davis), we may use that spot on a RB. But I think we actually have enough there. We can get through the year with 4 scholarship RBs. Only 3 received meaningful minutes this season. Also, Seldon will be a hybrid RB/WR, so he makes 5. If we don't land Carter, I think we take a LB. If we do, I think we stand pat at LB.

Anyway, I thought it would help to visualize the roster, numbers, openings, and needs.

Why no McCollough? Thought he did not participate in Sr Day Activities?

We did a self impose reduction of 10 scholarships in the Spring. So we are good unless the NCAA imposes more scholarship sanctions going forward. With that being said, we have up to 85 for scholarship players as of today.

Also, I highly doubt we take a QB this fall in the portal. The discussion regarding taking a QB or not have valid points for both arguments. We have greater immediate needs in the present so I think we wouldn't go QB shopping until the spring if we don't like our QB room after spring ball.

We played a lot of guys out of position. Hopefully we don't have to do that going forward.

Roster is definitely improving.

As appalled as I am with Banks I'm will to see it play out once the right guys are where they're supposed to be. Even if they're young.
Hadden is the only true CB we have.

Jalen Smith and Elijah Herring at ILB is the kind of athletes you want there.

Dline has looked pretty solid for a year now.
Need those edge guys to blossom.

And yeah I wish JM would go be an awesome safety at Ga State

Yes, Terry at DT. Thank you. I share your opinion on Parker and Perry. It's a shame because I was high on the upside of both, but Parker hasn't sniffed meaningful PT and Perry seems stuck in his development. He sure looks the part on the sidelines, though.
You know very well how hard OL is to play at this level. That's why so many highly rated OL fail. Tough Tough position to play.

😂😂😂 I think we all were fed up with our safety play this year. Love those kids but damn it was hard watching at times.

Agreed with everything else too. I'm hoping our young corners can push for real playing time next year and I would love Walker and Slaughter at safety.

1. I would say we need another DL, DB or OL more than a QB or a second TE. Other than that I think it looks correct.

2. I think the teams looks to be in pretty good shape for the most part. Wish that Hyatt would stay but I wouldn’t if I were him.

3. I also want to give the OP props. Great write up!

Definitely need 2 TE's and 2 WR's. Defense is stacked and we should grab a DB that can compete for the starting CB spot in my opinion.

Not a lot of experience at LB. Still a position of need. Would like to see us bring in at least one from portal. Mitchell was a disappointment this year and was terrible in the USC game. Herring saw more playing time the last 2 games but still needs more experience. I can see him beating out Mitchell by end of 2023.
Agree, Mitchell is terrible!

I would want way less offensive guys and way more defense. We have two serviceable tackles (Mincey and Crawford), I would just get 1 TE, then take 4 DBs if you can find them and save that QB spot just as a best available

1. Good write up. A lot of research in this.

2. I like our DBs we have committed with 5 EEs, but still need a cb and safety from the portal.

3. I’m on the fence with taking a QB. If we can land a big fish then you have to take them. Having only 3 scholarship QBs on the roster is scary especially when one is a true freshman and another is a redshirt freshman. I think that’s the reason we didn’t see JM run more at Vandy.

4. I like the “potential” of our Edge rushers, but I would love to get a proven game changer from the portal instead of a WR.

5. Definitely in need of an OT from the portal

6. I’m with you if Warren doesn’t return we need 2 TEs from the portal. CJH loves the TE in his offense.

This team is one shut down corner and a Leonard Little type of edge from being almost unbeatable.

With a shutdown corner, one side of the field is covered and the other can have help from safeties.

We NEED that guy who disrupts the backfield all game long. Also a John Henderson type DL wouldnt hurt either!!

Great write-up. Agree with much of it. Still expect more turnover with roster and hopefully can upgrade through portal. Speculating:
- QB think it is imperative to get someone with at least 2 years left.
- RB due to Seldon’s versatility I think we stick with what we have as have more needs elsewhere
- WR 1 slot is likely, another big time WR if has starter potential is available…maybe but not necessary.
- TE is a huge need as everyone has stated x 2. I loved how they started to use Fant. This position group needs to continue to expand in our offense.
- OL we need a starting left tackle. Most of our lineman are built like guards. I could see us losing 2 more to transfer portal. I hope the youngsters are ready to play.
- DT and DE unless we have some departures I think we stick with what we have.
- LB another important need to find a starter next to Beasley. Youngsters need to be ready.
- CB need a lock down starting corner. Hopefully our pass rush improves which will help this position group significantly. May take a couple years to upgrade this group.
- S / Star positions. We could lose 3 off current roster and not impact us detrimentally. We find a stud cornerback in portal would allow us to move other personnel to safety. Find another starter from portal really is a must.

Is it too much to expect to find 5 starters from the portal? Wishful thinking perhaps.
