Roster Management: needs and room

Great write-up. Agree with much of it. Still expect more turnover with roster and hopefully can upgrade through portal. Speculating:
- QB think it is imperative to get someone with at least 2 years left.
- RB due to Seldon’s versatility I think we stick with what we have as have more needs elsewhere
- WR 1 slot is likely, another big time WR if has starter potential is available…maybe but not necessary.
- TE is a huge need as everyone has stated x 2. I loved how they started to use Fant. This position group needs to continue to expand in our offense.
- OL we need a starting left tackle. Most of our lineman are built like guards. I could see us losing 2 more to transfer portal. I hope the youngsters are ready to play.
- DT and DE unless we have some departures I think we stick with what we have.
- LB another important need to find a starter next to Beasley. Youngsters need to be ready.
- CB need a lock down starting corner. Hopefully our pass rush improves which will help this position group significantly. May take a couple years to upgrade this group.
- S / Star positions. We could lose 3 off current roster and not impact us detrimentally. We find a stud cornerback in portal would allow us to move other personnel to safety. Find another starter from portal really is a must.

Is it too much to expect to find 5 starters from the portal? Wishful thinking perhaps.

USC got 16 last year who ended up starting.

This team is one shut down corner and a Leonard Little type of edge from being almost unbeatable.

With a shutdown corner, one side of the field is covered and the other can have help from safeties.

We NEED that guy who disrupts the backfield all game long. Also a John Henderson type DL wouldnt hurt either!!

The game of football has changed so much over the last 20 years. We no longer see a 2 back, 1 TE, 2 WR set. Teams now spread the field with 4 or 5 WR sets which makes it impossible for a corner to cover 1 side of the field.

To be good to great pass defense you have to have a good to great pass rush, linebackers that can cover in space, and cornerbacks that can play physical at the line in bump coverage.

If you can’t get pressure with your front 4 and contain the QB then it’s going to be an uphill battle no matter who you have at corner.

To your point we do need a CB (safety and linebacker) from the portal, but I think getting a proven edge rusher is the most important need.

1 QB (only if it's a big fish like Hudson Card)
There are potential Hendon Hookers out there. Sometimes those "big fish" are looking to transfer because they really did get a chance and are simply busts.
Probably a bigger need now and even greater if Hyatt leaves.
I would personally take more if there are interested quality OL's.
As many as you have space for.

UT needs 2+ LBs who are starter quality.

If a top tier RB is available then you take him.

This team lives and dies with elite QB play.

I say get the best one out of the portal you can get to go compete with Nico this spring and on.
TE. TE. TE.

Are you trying to say an Eric Berry type couldn't change a passing game right now?

Eric Berry played safety.

The discussion was about a corner shutting down half the field.

I know he played safety, I also knew someone would mention his position without considering I said "type" of player. The position he played doesn't matter.

When you have 3 receivers lined up on one side of the field then a corner can’t shut down that side of the field without help.

Super easy to understand.

Do you think a Payton Manning type could change the way OG is played today?

What an odd question...

Right but he can shut down the other side and allow all the other players in the secondary worry about the 3 receivers.....if we are in nickle then it would be 4 to cover 3.

The way offenses are today, not sure there such a thing as a "shut down corner" anymore.

Well the original statement was we only needed an Wric Berry type in the secondary and a leonard little type on the DL.....

Someone disagreed stating the number of receivers doesnt allow a corner to shut down one side of the field.

Why would a QB with 2 years left want to come here. This year just to sit behind Milton. Next year just to sit behind Nico
