Rucker: Lack of Plan B big concern for Vols

They shot 3s. They drove to the basket and were rejected. They tried feeding the post players to back their defenders into the paint. The open looks at three were probably the highest probability to add points each time down the court. TT had an effective defense as did Barnes with the players he had on the floor.

If we don’t have the bigs providing quality minutes then we will struggle against teams similar to Noba and Tech. Duke, Zags, and other quality teams have athletic bigs and guards with length, so our game plan may not match well.
Our post play is lacking as Fulky isn’t the same or teams have adjusted since the 2019 season.

Here's a thought out of left field that I would love everyone's input on. What if the issue isn't this team, but Thompson Boling Arena?!!? Hear me out...
I've been watching UT Basketball for 25+years. And every single time we play in a non-traditional college arena(as we did vs Villanova and Texas Tech), we go ice cold from 3. Just look at SEC Tourney in the GA Dome. Our shooting disappears.
So what IF...it's something with Thompson Boling arena, the lights, background, depth perception, etc? I'll hang up and listen...

Bigs are hard to find and to sign. BHH is raw and it’s yet to be determined what TN’s coaches will get out of him. It was unfortunate that Aidoo got sick - maybe he’ll have his strength back and not be too far behind by March. In the mean time Uros, ORN, and Fulk are doing enough to get TN some wins that are needed before even assuming an NCAAT bid is automatic.

They practice at Pratt. I think that Villanova and Texas Tech both play excellent defense which affects the shooting. But even as athletic as they were, I think that most of the 3s at MSG weren’t forced.

First, they weren’t told to keep “chucking up the 3’s.” Secondly, they had next to zero success driving to the basket. Options were limited, but continue on with your ridiculous narrative.
If we're going to cede the basket because of good defense rather than figure out how to outsmart it, we're not going far

This is probably the lamest of all time lame excuses I have ever read. How do yall even come up with these? Our shooting sucked and it we got beat. End of story.

The mid range shot is not even an option for this team. Hell, it wasn't an option for Texas Tech. One either takes a 3 or tries a layup/dunk. The three-point shot has ruined basketball.

Correct, and Vescovi hasn't seen a three point attempt that he doesn't like regardless of how inconsistent he is. Unfortunately, this is a product of Barnes' system and philosophy of defense first/offense second. I am not 100% convinced they even practice free throws during the season. It think Barnes' is a good coach but I am not sure that his system will ever be able to overcome its limitations on offense in terms of national success in the tournament.

I don't understand the posters saying player X or player Y hasn't "bought in to the program and doesn't practice hard"

I thought Barnes only recruits kids with high character, love defense, love to be coached up. Doesn't sound like BHH and maybe Aidoo.

Not sure about Mashack or the French kid. Seems like minutes ought to be given to 1 of those 4. Coulda used them against TT, couldn't have been any worse.

Teenagers are unpredictable.

In the games BHH hasn’t looked too fiery to me. He had a little run in the paint versus TN Tech and Presbyterian - but that was versus TN Tech and Presbyterian. I get the feeling that he’s not real enthusiastic about playing in the paint. I’m just speculating though based on what I’ve seen in the games. However he does have 29 rebounds in 114 minutes which is pretty good and only 5 TOs and 8 fouls which is also pretty good.

What we don’t know is how much the flu has affected the roster. It’s going to affect anybody that had it for at least a week and probably closer to two. Aidoo’s mono would have really disrupted his season. The bashers have zero idea what the staff is dealing with game to game.

You miss his game against NC?

Not making the dance would be a huge letdown for a team picked preseason to end top 3 in SEC, if not won outright.

Shouldn’t be a problem as long as the roster is at full strength. As good as the SEC is, a couple of injuries could be disastrous.

There’s about a 1% chance this team isn’t in the tournament. They already have two quality wins. That’s more than a lot of teams hoping can get into the dance can say

December is the time to figure things out before you get to March, but Tennessee’s wildly inconsistent offense on these big stages has become a cause for major concern. Why is that the case? I don’t have the answer. But I’m not the one who needs the answer. Barnes and his staff and his players are the ones who need the answer.

Tennessee was 5-of-28 from three against Villanova, and it was 6-of-40 from three against Texas Tech. Two games totaling 11-of-68 — less than 17 percent — from behind the arc. [UT] also pulled down just 22 combined offensive rebounds in those two games. Do those seem like the kind of numbers you’d see from a team with a Plan B?

After Tuesday’s loss, Tennessee is ranked No. 1 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. Number One. Numero Uno. The best. That’s a hell of a sturdy platform for postseason success. As sturdy as it gets, statistically speaking. But it won’t matter if this team doesn’t find alternative plans on offense. And it definitely won’t matter if this team continues to seem tight offensively on big stages.
Rucker: Lack of Plan B big concern for No. 13 Vols
Lite version: UT needs an active big man. UT needs BHH to get his chit together and play some ball.

Agree. I was responding to another who basically said @if we go to the tourney…” - something like that.

A much as I like him I just don't think Fulky is a good fit for what they are trying to do, don't get me started on Uros.
