Rumor Saban to take Southern Cal coaching job

Saban hasn't even been mentioned out here? Seems like the OP is the source of that rumor. Wishing Thinking I guess?

It's obviously dominated the local sports talk here this week and the candidates that keep coming up are John Harbaugh, Chip Kelly and Kyle Wittingham. Make the first two say no then get Wittingham when/if Harbaugh and Kelly turn USC down. The Interim Coach could get consideration if USC goes on some crazy winning streak under him.

No, they can't. They'll have to double the salary of whoever they're after to account for cost of living. They cannot afford Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer, and a few others.

Are you serious? USC COULD afford anyone they wanted...WOULD they? No, not for a football coach. As to the cost of living, and what our alums and boosters will do..a coordinator lived in a mansion by the beach, rent free, owned by one of our boosters, for two years. I've stated, the USC job provides a lot of perks, with a lot of grateful alums lined up to assist in the quality of life in SoCal.

Alabama is one of the poorest states in the country, shame on them for placing importance on football over poverty, education and poor health standards.

You need to post more often. You have to remember who you're communicating with.

I'll leave you to try and piece together how donations to a school's academic endeavors translates to athletics. In so doing, please explain how Vanderbilt can continue to suck at football under those conditions.

You don't get it.

A university's live blood is endowment AND fundraising. USC has been dedicated to football for 120 years, the tradition is deep, and rich. Every player position scholarship, three deep is endowed..including the HC salary and the Athletic Director. USC's endowment is currently 5.6 billion (Alabama's is 631.95 million), and only 2 billion from the 6 billion fundraising goal.

As far as annual fundraising, USC ranks #3 behind only Stanford and Harvard....it's been that way for several years. Before that, USC was always top 10, most years, top 5. The same boosters with their names on university buildings, stand ready, with check book in hand, to donate to the football program as needed.

Pete Carroll had a beautiful custom home built in Manhattan Beach while he was still at USC. Manhattan Beach is prime real estate in the U.S.

Good post. Nice info. Now, be ready to be trolled and insulted by many for bringing logic to VN.

I've completely lost track of the point you're trying to make.

I am not saying that USC will not get a good coach. All I've said is that they're not getting anyone from the upper echelon of coaches. The top 5 or 6 in rarified air like Saban, Meyer, etc. USC is plenty wealthy, but they are not going to spend the money it would take to grab the top guys.

If Haden is smart he looks away from the Carroll coaching tree. And he needs to look at how Texas handled their most recent coaching search and then do the exact opposite.

Not surprising you don't get it. When Pete Carroll left, he was earning one of the top CFB coaching salary - "reported" salaries, not including other benefits of a luxurious lifestyle.

Let's see...a mansion in Tuscaloosa, or a mansion in Manhattan Beach, where numerous NFL coaches, and highly paid NFL players live. USC has several billionaires that have made their money in real estate....a common nickname for Trojan alums and boosters out here is, the "USC Mafia" or the "USC cult"

All moot points, since Saban would never consider the job....and he's not on the list USC is interested in.

But, don't underestimate how much USC is willing to pay, after last night, and all this program has been through. Not many football schools can raise 4 billion dollars in fundraising, while on sanctions.

Personally, I'd take a mansion in Tuscaloosa or anywhere in the South over Manhattan Beach.

Be reasonable. You're talking to a Bammer. They can't understand a coach, any coach including his precious Saban, can be swayed with the right amount of money.

Any attempts otherwise is like trying to explain nuclear physics in Attic Greek to them.

So, who do you think they're going after, and why?

Good for you! As a native Southern Californian, whose family has been here over 100 years, I wish others felt like you.

I'm a 6th generation Floridian and have been overrun by NE'ers. Now I live in the Franklin area and have been overrun by your daughter and other SoCal deflectees haha.

I feel for you, thankfully we don't have to contend with those loud, brash people - NE snow birds, in Southern California.

I would hope my daughter had better manners than those folks, she seems to have assimilated very well to her new home, or so I have been told by her wonderful Tennessee friends.

There are a good number of former SoCal residents in the Franklin/Brentwood area these days. I'm sure a lot of native Floridians would be glad to send some of those Yankees your way.
