Russian nuclear disaster...maybe?

Ok nerd. lol. Does is provide an advantage against our detection and defenses as far as you know?

As mentioned, it allows it to fly a less predictable path due to unlimited range. It can be programmed to choose flight paths that more easily avoid radars. So yes, it is more difficult to target, but cruise missiles in themselves are difficult to find in ground clutter and the nap of the earth anyways.

The hypersonic cruise missile is more easily seen as it flies at high altitude, but compresses the reaction time of the defenses because it is so fast. Either variety is difficult, just if you want to go fast and seen or slow and unseen.

Now a subsonic earth hugging stealthy cruise missile is fearsome, like the nuke one below. There are different degrees of stealth though and we have JASSM, which is tactical and low observable.

I hope this explosion set them back a bit. By looking at the videos, it looked like there had been multiple explosions before the big one then the video of the munitions explosion after.

Please explain.

My apologies Hunder and Mick as I cannot confirm. I saw a weapons expert on TV comment this evening say that due to the shape it was probably not hypersonic. He was an institutional guy, not a typical TV military commentator and was the first to mention "not hypersonic". Shown on post 105 is a supposed picture, but makes we question the validity of his statement. It looks to be air breathing and exhaust plume exits non aft and well up the fuselage. The inlet does not particularly look like a ramjet, although it is a poor pic and may not even actually be it. Below is a US ramjet and a US rocket powered hypersonic missile.

Now, doing some research this missile is really unknown. If it is hypersonic ramjet, it would need to fly at minimum of 60K' as referenced in my post the other day. If ramjet air breathing, maybe it fits under the ABM umbrella and probably outruns SAM's like THADD. Let me know if you find anything that confirms.

As mentioned before by someone, they would have to get it working first, and even then we still have our nuclear Triad deterrence.

U.S. Tests Missile With A Range Prohibited By Now-Abandoned Treaty

Why did this missile have a nuke payload if it was just a test fire?

During tests It wouldn't have a nuke payload such as in a bomb but it would have a nuclear reactor on board. What makes it fly is the reactor superheats fuel (probably hydrogen) that has been injected into a chamber similar to what is found in a rocket engine. This causes a (supposedly) controlled but continuous explosion of the hydrogen inside the chamber and the rocket rides on the ejecta. For all intents and purposes it is a nuclear powered rocket.

I'm no physicist but from what I've read this is the way I understand it.

Trump said Putin strongly denies anything happened. Science says otherwise but it's fake science.

BREAKING NEWS: Photo of control button for new Russian rocket being obtained by Lavrov. Putin sent an email requesting the instruction manual, but the email mysteriously vanished. Stay tuned.

Just imagine what that cheap button would go for on eBay with verification paperwork.

For goodness sake, are there any nuclear engineers on VN? If so, could you please explain to the masses how a "nuclear powered rocket" is all but unachievable...as, apparently, the Russians just proved? Google "nuclear-powered aircraft", and read about that abortive experiment. Of course, you don't have to worry about shielding with a nuke powered rocket, since there won't be any humans onboard.

The Soviets / Russians have played fast and loose with fission and fusion energy for decades, and history is full of examples of "when they got it wrong". This is simply the latest example. Since this wasn't a sub that sank, they'll just pour concrete on it until the radiation surveys reach "background level".....well, by their standards.

All the same, I'd be hinky about eating anything that came from a farm or fishery within 100 or so miles from this latest "glitch" for the next, say...50 years?

And buy on the iodine market. Big right now, especially in Europe.

Just watching AHC about the new shell that was put over the waste that was Chernobyl #4. 1.6b to build the largest movable shell, was donated by several nations to deal with the problem.
They are now giving dark tours in that area. Any tour that comes with a radiation detector, count me out.
