Not necessarily an Arky fan, but if I had to pick another team to root for in the SEC it would be them. With the addition of Barry Odom as DC and Brad Davis as OL I think Arky will be a more competitive, smash mouth football team. If they can recruit somewhat decent I see them being much improved.

They were at their best when they were big and athletic up front. I don’t think we’ll ever see a Mcfadden team again but given time I think they can give teams fits.

Pittman is a good OL coach but a real gamble hire as a HC. Odom is a good hire at DC better than what they had in Chavis though.

Going to take a while, Morris ran off a lot of the pieces on that OL.

Maybe not McFadden and the wildcat offense but a return to the power I or some form of pro set offense with an emphasis on the running game as priority #1.

I can see Arkansas competing for 2nd or 3rd in the west division with a few surprise finishes now and then.

Sounds like Kendal Briles could be the frontrunner for OC. From FSU's 247 site:

If he were going to hire Kendall Briles, why would he not announce that prior to signing day to get a little buzz. Signing class was terrible.

Arkansas will always be Arkansas and they'll be looking for a new head football coach in December 2023
I agree. Sam Pittman was the best Offensive Line coach in college football but how many position coaches do you see elevated to the head coach of a Power 5 program (and in the toughest division?). Arkansas has really rolled the dice on this one.

In my opinion Ole Miss hit a homer while Arkansas struck out in their head coaching search

Well now the latest rumor is Major Applewhite. Seems like that would be underwhelming with the other names out there. Probably wanted to focus 100% on the early signing period before rushing to name an OC I guess.

The signing class was always going to be down from normal years just because of the coaching transition just like it was from Bielema to Morris but Pittman has jumped us up 50+ spots from where we were 2 days ago for whatever that's worth. Average player rating per 247 is at .8680 or about 30th in the nation. So while Arkansas doesn't have that many numbers in the class, quality is better than vandy and Mizzou and roughly in line with Ole Miss. Might have to undersign this year and take more next year.

Kirk Ferentz and Pat Fitzgerald did it. Not P5, but PJ Fleck came to Western Michigan from the Buccaneers as a WR coach. Pittman got offers to be an OC but turned them down. Odom actually offered him at Missouri and he came close to taking it. It would be nice for him to have more experience but I guess that's why it's important for him to hire a good staff surrounding him. He can definitely recruit.

Didn't Ole Miss just try it with Matt Luke? Pittman has been around long enough to learn from some good coaches. He could potentially be a decent CEO type, but its definitely a gamble imo.

Ed Orgeron did it twice. He was USC's DL coach before he became head coach at Ole Miss, and then he was LSU's DL coach before he became head coach at LSU. He has never been a coordinator

Pittman was much more well regarded as a coach/recruiter than Luke was though. Even Ole Miss fans will tell you they didn't like Luke as their OL coach before he even got the HC job. I think Georgia could have done better than him.

We can't really get worse than we are right now, all I want right now is someone the players will like and play hard for which they didn't do for Morris. Luke's record at OM would even be a major upgrade from where we're currently at.

The players loved Luke though. I think Luke was a solid hire given how quickly UGA picked him up. He got Tate and Lindbergh to stick and if he gets jones and SVP he’ll be a home run. I did hear that Pittman helped UGA with Tate after he left.

That is probably the best example, but of course, Ed Orgeron was not successful in his first head coaching job at Ole Miss. That is an important point. It may work out, but Arkansas is a tough job right now, though. They used to be able to recruit Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas well. However, that was a long time ago.

It's definitely a tough rebuilding job. However people keep saying our talent level is basically Vandy, which they have played like, but the 247 composite talent rankings have us actually closer to South Carolina in talent than Vandy or even Kentucky:

Alabama 1
Georgia 3
LSU 5
A&M 12
Auburn 13
Florida 15
Tennessee 16
South Carolina 21
Miss State 23
Ole Miss 25
Arkansas 26
Kentucky 34
Missouri 40
Vanderbilt 52

2019 College Football Team Talent Composite

Just reinforces how awful of a coach Morris is.
