We did the one in St Lucia for our honeymoon and it was just what we needed. There were also 2 other Sandals there so we could visit and eat at all of them.
If I had it to do over again, Id have gone to St. Lucia as well. Ive heard its amazing, and far more secluded.
We did the Royal Plantation for our honeymoon, back in 2002, so it was much smaller then. We loved it, but that was a looooong time ago.
Ill give you the quick pro/con rundown:
Pro
- Beautiful, very quiet/private (at the time), which is what we wanted
- Reciprocity with other Sandals resorts
- Shuttles to/from anywhere
- Great food, service, accommodations
Con (these are Jamaica-related, not the resort)
- As has been mentioned, you will see third world country poverty most places that arent the resort
- At the time we were there, crime was pretty bad in Kingston and some other areas. We did go to a market and walk around and did some other things off site, but its something to be aware of.
- You will believe your lifes about to end on the cab ride from the airport. The taxi shuttles do roughly 65 MPH on quasi paved roads that are slightly wider than one of our lanes. They all drive straight at each other then veer slightly just at the last possible second to go around. Its horrifying at first. The plus to that is it made me appreciate my wife all the more thinking we were about to die two days after marriage.
