How the hell is this a useful metric? Not one of the 5 best verticals last year ran one of the top 5 40's and in fact none even went sub-4.4.
You do know that the fastest 40's on record; John Ross at 4.22 and Chris Johnson/Rondel Melendez correspond to 37, 35 and 37 verticals, right? Of course not...you just pretend to be knowledgeable.
God bless you D4H, you beautiful doofus.

Lol... After a laser timed 40, he tweets this.
I said that because at Penn State he was measured with a 38 inch vertical and a 4.33 40 yard dash. Once he improved on that 38 inch vertical at the combine, I thought he would also improve on his 40-time from college.
And if you watched his 2nd 40, you will see he stumbled at the start and still ran 4.40.
If he didn't stumble, he would have ran sub-4.35. I'm sure of it.
Did you even watch him run? He clearly stumbled out of the gates on his second 40 and still ran 4.40.
If he had gotten a clean start he would have easily run 4.35 or faster.
Saquon Barkley clearly has 4.3 speed. He just didn't get the best start today. I blame it on his training. They didn't prepare him for how the lines would be at the combine. If you watched the telecast you will see the line judge at the start had to stop him and make him line up differently from how he initially wanted to line.
I think the improper training on how to line up as well as the stumble at the beginning cost him a chance to run a sub-4.35 40-yard dash.
How does someone who claims to know so much about this stuff come in here and cite some school measured time? How can you not be aware of how often those times are shown to be garbage come combine time?
And as I said, using the vertical as a speed indicator was a dubious metric from the outset. There is literally nothing that guarantees a fast 40 based on a vertical or vice versa.
You being "certain" of anything holds not even a drop of water. There's literally no reason to believe he was going to go sub-4.35, particularly since his "stumble" came on his 2nd run, a 4.42, not a 4.40.
State College, PA - Penn State Football: Watch Saquon Barkley Run A 4.40 40-Yard Dash -
Penn State RB Saquon Barkley at 2018 Combine:![]()
- Stronger than Joe Thomas

- Faster than Devin Hester

-not as quick as Marquise Liverpool
-slower than Chris Johnson
-doesnt jump as high as Speedy Noil
Barkley is a phenomenal athlete and outstanding running back whos gonna have a really good nfl career imo. But the cherry picking comparisons and the over the top stuff on the NFL Network today about his workout was borderline ridiculous. As Rich Eisen just asked, did anybody else work out at the combine today? Lol.
I'm fully aware of that. But did you miss the part where I said Penn State listed his vertical at only 38 inches. I thought since he did better than his listed vertical from college that given the work they put into the pre-draft process that he could approach or do better than his listed 40-time at Penn State.
And I'm confident if he didn't stumble, he would have ran sub-4.35.
The fact he still ran 4.40-4.42 with a stumble is mind-boogling.
This...I mean c'mon. Barkley is a great athlete but people with a clue (obviously we aren't talking D4H) don't just go assuming their guy is going to run a sub-4.4, especially when over 230lb.
Exactly. I dont know how good he will be in the pros, or care, but his 4.41 is very impressive. Like, starting X receiver, draws the best corner every down impressive. Very, very few people that big run a 4.4...legend says bo Jackson ran a 4.3...he is by far the best athlete of my lifetime. I am 40.
Nah. Giants o-line is terrible.
I think 1,200 rushing yards and 14 TDs is more realistic.
If you out him behind the Cowboys o-line like Zeke, he would rush for 2,000+ yards and 20+ TDs as a rookie.
