Folks, watch the game... the whole game. It's still up on the ESPN web site.
The game was physical. Both ways.
The part where Wilson gets Porter's head in her mouth was not a foul... the two players simply walked into each other and Wilson happened to get the worst of it. (One angle of the ESPN replay clearly shows that but, surprise, that's not the angle that SC media chose to show.
Dawn is a great coach. But she has a mouth like a sailor and mercilessly works the refs the whole game. The result? She's wearing some of the refs out (there aren't that many that are assigned to the big tv games) and they're on her case by the tip-off or soon after. Whose fault is that?
If you watch the whole game I challenge you to tell me which of Wilson's five fouls were bad calls... they were all clear cut. And Cunningham's misdeeds were also called.
The fouls were even until the last 90 seconds of the game when SC had to foul every few seconds to counter a double digit lead. And some of these fouls could easily have been called intentional or egregious. More Missouri players fouled out than SC players. And there were some dubious calls that went against Missouri (check out Schutz's fourth foul, for example.)
Missouri's strategy was to double and triple down on Wilson and the other SC posts and make SC beat them from the outside. That's a legit strategy, even if Dawn didn't like it. (Remember when Walz used the same strategy in Louisville's big upset against Baylor in the NCAA Tourney? Mulkey didn't like that and wound up paying a fine! This happens a lot when David manages to beat Goliath -- "No fair! He used a sling!")
Missouri's offensive strategy also caught Staley unprepared. They expected a mostly perimeter game but Mizzou took it inside. Cunningham, the leading three-point shooter in the SEC didn't attempt a single three! SC's transition game and Harris's shooting almost bailed them out. But Missouri's ball handling is way better than last year's and the SC press was ineffective.
I really believe Dawn's biggest frustration was that she was out-coached in COMO for the second year in a row. And don't be surprised if Holly doesn't employ the same strategy, or a variant therof, against the Gamecocks. If the Lady Vols can hold Wilson in single digits there is no way that South Carolina can beat them.
