'19 SC WR/DB Kenney Solomon (Tennessee signee)

Call me a star gazer but I would be disappointed if we took this guys commitment. I understand DB’s is CJP specialty but Solomon being part of this class means we missed out on guys higher on our board. If we was to take a project much rather it be a defensive linemen or just use the extra spot for one of or both of the transfers we have coming in. Flame away...
Hate to break the bad news to ya but we already missed on plenty that were higher up the board.

Feel the same way. I’ll root for the kid naturally but If he’s a take then we missed on way too many guys.

Last year we reached for projects like Kenneth George and Brandon Davis. Neither contributed. I get BT & AT, but personally I’d rather roll with the Burrell, Fields, and other kids we’ve already signed as opposed to taking another diamond in the rough type.

Especially if it means cutting into our 2020 numbers.
This...if he is as outstanding as these reports say and this coach who had him on the radar for such a long time "knew" about him, he would have been on him long before now. This take means the staff whiffed on the recruiting trail down the stretch. There has never been a low ranked player with a suspect offer list recruited to UT that pumpers on vn didnt claim was a hidden gem.

Again,

There were many In-State and Out of state DB prospects that were 4 stars that Pruitt didn't even recruit.
Yet they have recruited this guy.

You have no idea what their board looks like. What WE all know is that UT is recruiting this kid. Do you honestly think Pruitt gives a $hit about what 247 or Rivals think about this kid?? He's a coach that has molded All-American DBs. Still is! Yet he's recruiting him, He doesnt even have a ranking for his position. Yet, I think they rank them into 200+ at each position? There are not even 20 better CBs in high school than this kid....much less 199+

Our team has a bunch of needs. It's not just having bodies, its' upgrading talent, so even if we have two SR, 1 JR and 2 SO ILBs he's recruiting that position hard because of the importance of it.
Yes, there are other players ahead of him, but its mostly based off of team need, not because he's some bum that can fill out the roster.

You may be aware. If you are then this is for the benefit of those who aren't.

Every major program uses recruiting services. Not Rivals or 247 which are designed for consumers but real analysts being paid real money for exclusive reports and evaluations. Coaches may "find" a player... but most of what we see is a product of firms whose job is to find talent. A great one... will find talent that others miss.

This kid may be terrific or he may be a fall back as you suggest. Either way, I don't think it was a "whiff" in the sense that the staff went scrambling. If their recruiting service is doing its job then they have a hopper of guys to add into the mix as others are taken out.

Chop it up any way you want but this kid would be a reach like Brandon Davis and Kenneth George, and Joseph Norwood were last year.

Not saying he won’t become a player, however. I do trust this staff and these talent evaluators. But there is a reason he’s down the list as far as back up options. If Jammie or Russell or To’oto’o etc wanted in, we wouldn’t be considering him.

Do you remember the statement that Pruitt made on NSD last year? He said that we would have a top class in the country in 2019. When we start hearing that it's not looking good with our top recruits and all the sudden a 2 star whose best offer is UCF gets offered 6 days before NSD, this isn't the top class that Pruitt was referring to.

yeah 6 foot tall cbs with 4.3 speed are hard to accept. need my orange tinted glasses for that...

And I cant believe Jake4 liked this silly response.
yea yea...remember everyone talking about Devrin Young's speed and how unstoppable he was going to be? Remember the "reach" of that TE volleyball player out of California that couldn't block the kicker in a circle of life drill? There is more to playing football than 40 time and reach, but don't let me rain on your parade.

Hmmm and which coaches signed those two again?

Additionally, I think Devrin was a decent player. Just not an SEC player. Would’ve been better in the Big 12 or ACC

I don’t think either of you are wrong. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think the staff likes this kids raw tools and might have a higher ceiling bc of them, but is a multi year project. I also think the staff missed on some more college ready kids that are 4-5 star cb.

So, Pruitt has better stop watches than Butch did?? Hate to break it to you, but we are in the SEC...not Big12 or ACC.

Not but he knows what real, SEC level football players look like.

Devrin was small as hell and Woody Quinn was a late flier by butch. Those shouldn’t be your standards for what 3 stars look like

Guess Brandon Davis reads here. :eyeballs /BlueFont

"a top class"

kinda depends on how you want to define that. and pruitt meant it. and he certainly approached it that way.

and there will be some that will get bent about the rank # by our name come NSD and use that as some stick to beat a dead horse with. Pruitt has already said it has to be better going forward. said it on ESD. he knows how the lay of the land works...he's been at UGA and Bama. he knows we're not there yet talent wise, and knows where it has to get to if that's what kind of program we're going to be.

but i would just say this, way back when this cycle first started, Crouch was #1 prospect, Wright was #2 and Morris was like #15....all 5*'s. Keyton, Mcollough, Harris etc...were all top 100-150 guys. and as we've seen prospect rankings shuffle, perception shifts and those that want to throw shade now, will do so as a result.

there's nothing wrong wiht this class. no matter how it closes.

it can ONLY get better if we close who we want to close with. it will not get worse if we don't. and at the end of the day, it's going to be an ELITE OL class we get, which is still our biggest need mind you....and it's a VERY good defensive back class, also a big time need.

people getting hung up now on the last 1 or 2 guys. cool. won't matter one bit, this class has guys that are going to be good players for us.....and will be part of winning again here.

agreed.

LOL, you know that's called "coach speak," right?
that wasn't coach speak. he meant it. he knows top 20 isn't good enough. neither is top 15.

he also knows that his pitch at TN is quite different than it was at Bama or UGA or FSU. we do need some results in 2020 to back up the pitch. we do need to close better on these recruits that go the distance for the entire cycle and sign on NSD. Pruitt even said as much on the ESD.

it doesn't mean though that this class is bad or that anyone should be disappointed in it as a whole.

it's ok to be disappointed we didn't get guys like bogle, eboigbe, norton...and HT if he doesn't come here. getting those guys would make this entire class elite. and that's what we have to get to.

but it doesn't take away anything from the kids that are coming, cause we do have some ballers in this class.

we just need and want more of them. no one is/will/should disagree with that. even Pruitt and co.

While I understand some folks criticism. You are going off the data/stars you see. But remember that South Carolina is an Under recruited state. There's a lot of talent that's not discovered or recruited. Darius Leonard, DJ Swearinger and Josh Norman are perfect example of that. While I'm not saying he will be that good you have to keep in mind the talent in SC goes under evaluated year after year. Take jump the worst thing that happens is he doesn't workout and transfers. Its 1 player out of an 85 man roster

It's semantics, but proclaiming that we will sign a "top" class in 2019 to the public is coach speak in my book.

Agree with the rest of your post, though. Even if we only add Wright, it's a great, foundational class. I've been particularly impressed with the type of player this staff recruits. Even a majority of the 3* kids we've targeted are different than the ones the prior staff recruited.
