I haven't heard anything about it. I think that maybe it was just a rumor.

I think he said something like "He should hold a press conference announcing his retirement."

Sarge took RS quote out of context. Randy said he and Brent would discuss the situation after the bowl game. There was no comment about a press conference. Randy acknowleged that he and Brent had briefly discussed Brent's future. Randy said he believed Brent would remain a Vol. sometimes I think DonSarge lets his wishes become facts. How could anyone want to get rid of Schaeffer?

Schaeffer looked really rusty today. I really hope we can convince him that he can use his legs more effectively as a receiver.

Brent was really rusty. Out of action for what 2-1/2 months? Sick for part of the Cotton Bowl practices. BUT, he showed his potential against granny's team.

However, I'd love to have him at WR or slot as well. A couple of flanker passes would terrorize most DCs.

Schaeffer has stated to the public he has no plans to transfer. That could change come May but for now its a dead issue.

As long as the internet is around, this is wishful thinking.

I agree - if Ainge beat out Clausen this fall, why wouldn't he do it again in the Spring?

Because we hadn't played in the Cotton Bowl yet last spring, Georgie. Rick Clausen is the man right now and I hope he is enjoying every minute of it. He definitely deserves it.

No offense but proper spelling, punctuation and grammar go along way towards credbility.

Clausen has been good, and not to bring the party down, but we were playing an Aggie team on a bad day whose pass defense is already one of the worst in the nation. I wish we could have given Rick a better test, but we couldn't... He did awesome regardless, and I am damn glad we have him behind our freshman qb's.

But alas, it is very late in his college career. He has proven himself well as a backup, but I am not sure about him taking the helm for an entire season... Ainge began to show only that he was playing more consistent before he was injured against ND. Plus, I would like to give Ainge three years as a starter, I still have the feeling that he could go and do great great things while playing in orange.

Ainge or Crompton will be the starter in 05

Crompton will never start until he learns the playbook, learns to read defenses, checkoffs at the LOS and is comfortable with the speed of the game in the SEC. If Crompton starts next year we have serious problems. He will be great in the future, but even wishing him to start next year without any experience is without logic. We have 3 returning QBs that have already been in battle.

As I posted in the Rick Clausen thread:

As quoted in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN by Ron Higgins.

"Memo to Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer:
Dear Guys,
The quarterback jof is mine until further notice.  If you want it back, you better bring it in spring practice.
Kindest regards,
Your teammate, Rick Clausen"

TN has got a big problem coming up. Who do you choose for starting qb? The competition is going to be fierce for the position. Hopefully, they(qb's) will bring there level of play to a higher level in fighting for the start and then transfer that competitiveness onto the field. What a problem to have!!!

Edit: For some reason this sounds familiar...where have I heard about this type of problem before??????? ;)

Other schools are worried about recruiting because of all the coaching changes that happened this year... We are worried because our depth chart is so full of talent it will be hard to manage. What a problem to have, indeed.

After seeing all the hype Vince Young got last night I can't see us keeping Schaffer much longer. I think Schaffer can scramble just as well as Young and is a far better passer than Young. He's a starter

Schaeffer is out guys. I have no wishes for him positive or negative. He CANNOT lead us to 13 victories. Why do you guys love a scrambling, East-West runner so much? Football is a North-South game. Please do not interpret my posts, I am generally very clear with my wishes BhamVolFan. He got passed forever by Rick Clausen yesterday, and earlier this year by EA. He is out, find him another position or some transfer forms.( getting rid of him is as easy as getting rid of James Banks, Montrel Jones, Brandon Johnson, DeWanyne Dotson and the rest of the skilled players we have lost in the past.)

It has to do with a lot of things Don. But the biggest asset given to an offense is TIME.

Having a QB who is able to squirm free of sacks, buys him time (east or west) to look downfield (north or south) and find an open receiver. A good DB can cover a reciever for a maximum of about 5 seconds. After that, whne the WR stops his pattern and starts free lancing his route, its impossible for any DB to cover him.

Also, having a mobile QB able to squirm free of sacks, gives the offense a 3rd dimension (what I call the X offense). When he gets free, is he gonna run (North or South)? Or is he gonna pass (North or South)?

Hence option offenses. But it all relies on having your QB be perfectly cool and collected, aware of every single thing happening on the field and making sure he knows all of his routes inside and out. Basically, the perfect QB. Schaeffer is good, but far from that. Starting him all season would be disastrous, quite frankly. He is not yet good enough at reading defenses and putting the ball where it needs to be when he is throwing.

This is something that Ainge did very well this season. I thought that he was going to be sacked a bunch of times, but he would step up in the pocket. For a freshman to do it that well in the SEC impressed me a lot.

I choose to believe the Aggies were a TERRIFIC team that just couldn't handle our lightning speed, brilliant play-calling, or mammoth strength.

You, of course, have the right to be wrong.

 Nothing that wasn't mammoth about the Vols in Dallas, I'll tell you that much. The team played wonderfully in any aspect of the game, and could have beaten any team in the country and even hung with the big three.
