Doesn't "any team in the country" INCLUDE "the big three"?

Beaten every team in the country EXCEPT the top three and then hung with them. Maybe even beat Auburn.

And if we can play that way next season, and make it count 100%, it will be all the sweeter. We could very easily find ourselves in the same position as Southern Cal is now; Winning national titles and looking to return and do the same with their youth.

Clausen played great against a good A&M team. He very much deserved the MVP of the game. The Vols were very fortunate to have a backup of his caliber when the other qbs were hurt.

However, when looking ahead to 2005.... the Vols will need a QB who can stretch the field and perform over the course of the entire season against all competition.

Ainge has the arm strength and the accuracy.... and with another offseason of learning the offense should be well equipped to win the starting position. Clausen knows the offense very well, but physically can't throw an accurate deep pass.

If Shaeffer stays, he'll be hard pressed to be 2nd string. Ainge will start, Clausen will backup and Crompton will redshirt.

should we add o. smith to that list too?

sarge could be right about it. i dont see him giving the vols 13 wins in a season but if used like the qbs at georgia, it could work some good things for us.

I'd say have Schaeffer and Clausen as equal 2nd stringers, and use Schaeffer as relief and Clausen as a replacement for Ainge. If they flat-out make Schaeffer a third stringer, we will have a very unhappy qb on our hands.

The best Schaeffer can hope for is spot duty at QB for a series just to keep the defense guessing.

As for starting a Freshman QB next , I guess it must have not worked out too well this year. Just for you INFO
1. Crompton already knows the playbook as well as Ainge and Schaeffer
2. He is just as talented and maybe a little more than Ainge and Schaeffer
3. His arm is as good or better than Ainge's and both hae a better arm than Schaeffer.
4. While neither are as quick as Schaeffer they are both more elusive than Tee Martin with Crompton being 2nd only to Schaeffer.

Biggest thing Crompton has to do is get use to the speed of the game.

5. Putting Crompton in will waste the recruitng dollars we spent on Ainge and Schaeffer. Redshirt Crompton anyways; We will get far more longevity out of our deep QB talent in doing so.

I see everyone is missing the point on how small Ric was at LSU. He gained more weight and his arm got stronger and he became better. who is to say Shaeffer can't do the same thing. I feel like if he do that and study the playbook book he is more dangerous of them all. JUst don't give Ainge the job just yet. I think they should rotate them like the did against granny clampett. We need them all. I guess all of us Vol fans are so stuck on the drop back passer than to do things that win Look at the Sooners they was a option team and changed their style of play and have been in the title game 3 out of 4 years. Let's mix it up and get back our title back.

This qb situation is a business and the coaches CANNOT worry about Schaeffer's feelings. He is not as talented as Ainge, for what our system demands, and definately doesn't have the maturity or game managing skills of Clausen. Sorry Brent, we need some help at DB. Two is a party, Three is a crowd, move over and make room for Crompton to take over in the future. ( you cannot do what OU does without changing our offensive schemes. this destroys continuity and it is not possible schematically to drastically differ between qb's)

it sure hasn't hurt OU!!! wake up. 3 championship appearences in 4 years... come on you have to come better than that lame excuse. We didn't win with Peyton and it took for us to change some things up with Tee with win it all. I hope Brent come back on fire and prove all the doubters wrong. you are just stuck with the the system. You see Phil change some things up by starting freshmen qb's It can work people

It will not work, it will not be given a chance. End of story. You cannot have multiple styles of qb. Why does CPF recruit pocket style passers? Schaeffer is the odd man out in this situation, be done with him; move to db or transfer! Peyton did NOT cost us the championship and Tee Martin did not win us the championship.

I say we should move Brent to a WR, CB, or Safety. He is very fast and could probably shake most CB's so I think WR may be his best fit.

The only thing i hate about vol fans is they everyone praise Peyton and give Tee no credit. People acting like he led us to the title.

I'm just glad that a program as well-deserving of a national title as Tennessee got one, no matter who did it. Peyton didn't win one, nor did he play during a pinnacle season at UT, but he did very well, for which I am also glad.

Volman1970,
Facts here Tee was the only the QB of the team and spent most of his time handing off to a stable of RB's. The NCAA Championship belong's to AL Wilson and a defense that never quit.
The offense more than once got saved by the Defense. For you to say that Tee was the reason UT won that Championship shows how little you know about not only football but UT football
What people realize is Peyton was the catalyst that propelled UT to that Championship season. He helped bring alot of the talent on that team and to UT and some players who were key to that season would have never came to UT if not for Peyton. For that matter more than a couple of current players would have never came to UT if not for Peyton. If you think Tee was half the QB Peyton was you need to go to a remedial course on football. Tee was above average at best, but then again so was Clausen with the difference being the 98 & 99 teams had more talent than the 4 previous teams and any since then. Obviously you have a grudge against Peyton and all he has done for the UT football program and for the University and your harping on how poor Tee, who by the way almost got UT on probation, is so abused is only belittling yourself. For your info Peyton did lead UT to that title by his actions and by his class and I've explained before how he did. No he didn't play that season but he sit the stage.
Schaeffer is not a UT QB and has started his last game at QB for UT and you can write that in your little black book in ink. He is not the QB that can lead UT ot an NCAA Championship not can he lead them to an SEC Championship, he was given the starting job at the beginning of the year and could not hold the job due to his inability to read defenses and his proclivity to run while showing NO pocket presence. He can get better but Ainge will get better and Crompton has more talent and he applies himself more than schaeffer has. R. Clausen did a very fine job but remember ND he wasn't as bad as most of you complained about then and is not as good as most of you want to proclaim him now, yes he has gotten bigger and his arm is alittle stronger but Ainge's and Schaeffer's are already better than his. R. Clausen is a steady hand that can help the other QB's and if needed play but the A&M team that showed up was not the same team the gave Texass and Okie a run for their money and not even a shadow of Auburn and he cannot lead UT to an NCAA or SEC Championship.

Tee and Peyton were and are great for Tennessee football. Peyton was far better but Tee got it done. No doubt he deserves alot of credit for that season.

Schaeffer is out guys. I have no wishes for him positive or negative. He CANNOT lead us to 13 victories. Why do you guys love a scrambling, East-West runner so much? Football is a North-South game. Please do not interpret my posts, I am generally very clear with my wishes BhamVolFan. He got passed forever by Rick Clausen yesterday, and earlier this year by EA. He is out, find him another position or some transfer forms.( getting rid of him is as easy as getting rid of James Banks, Montrel Jones, Brandon Johnson, DeWanyne Dotson and the rest of the skilled players we have lost in the past.)

nah hes gonna be a vol next year........ :rocks:

If BS can't hang at QB I think we could use him as a kickoff and punt returner. We need help there bad, we were horrible on returns this year. He would be very dangerous in the open field. If not him we have to find somebody with speed returning kicks.

You guys are in la-la land if you think Brent will stay and play some other position. He believes that he is a QUARTERBACK (and so do A LOT of other people, AND schools). Asking him to field kicks would be like asking a chef to wash dishes.

You think a guy dreaming of umpteen-jillion dollars in the NFL wants to catch a ball and run full steam into a wall of charging bulls? Watch a "helmet cam" from a kick-returner and you'll see what I mean. That's the ballsiest (and riskiest) position on the field.

IF we can keep him (and I'm not convinced that we can), we'll have to find some way to give him time at QB.
