Dodged a bullet.....glad the orange faithful stepped up and did what we had to do to keep from sinking further into obscurity..........herbstreit going to cry and wail over this article?
That Sunday was one of my proudest moments as a Vol fan. I don’t care one whit about what others think about UT or the fan base when it comes to him. He was/is not a good coach and the last thing the program and University needed at that time was the extra baggage he brought.

Dude is scum and an overrated HC.

Him representing our program would have turned me away immediately.

Never been more proud to be a Vol when we all stood up and said No! We knew better than all the talking heads calling us names for turning Schiano down. We knew he was a bad coach, we knew his baggage would bring us down, we knew it would just slide us closer to mediocrity.

We knew better and we prevailed. Might have had to go through Pruitt to get to Huepel but that’s the broken road we had to travel down.

Yup. 1. Sub-standard coach, 2. Extra bad baggage, 3. Plus, just a terrible fit for our upland South culture.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm kinda enjoying Heupels warp speed offense.

Going back to a ball control, etc game would probably seem quite boring at this point.

When Heupel retires from UT in 2045 after winning his fifth NC hopefully we hire someone else with an uptempo philosophy

How dare you talk about Heupel retiring! Well, I guess it's ok. There is a 99.9% chance I won't be around in 2045 anyway.

If he was so good then why didn't Ohio St hire him as head coach. The media bashed Tennessee for not hiring him. Tennessee was in the right for not bringing this guy to UT.

Many were willing to give Butch and Cornbread a shot at coaching our beloved Vols.

However, IMHO, Schiano would've been a stain that resonated for years and seen the program shamed and the Big 10 laughing as they were able to pull off the biggest con job in the ongoing battle for supremacy between SEC and Big 10.

Vols Forever!

Schiano NEVER!!

Doubtful. They are both terrible coaches in different ways. As another poster said, why didn’t Ohio State consider him? Because they knew what we know.
Bingo, that right there. ^^^

He's a crappy coach, and he's been crappy pretty much everywhere he's coached, and we (the fanbase) were tired of having crappy coaches foisted on us by you-know-who and told to smile and like it. And yes, the Penn State baggage was a real thing and repelled many people, but really, the Volshevik Revolution was all about a fed-up fanbase saying, no, we're not content with having Mediocre Joe presented as our new coach and expected to fall over ourselves in gratitude.

Go Vols, and go for excellence!

I never wanted him or Pruitt just saying he would’ve been marginally better probaly than Pruitt but we still probaly would be stuck with him going 7-5 and 8-4 every year and I don’t think he would’ve been able to recruit very well in the SEC. Sadly Mel Tucker was the best choice of the bunch.

And wouldn't that be an awful way to live as a Vol fan.

So not "much better"; just a different version of awful with a different set of accompanying miseries.

I was just getting ready to say something similar. I agree that not accepting Schiano due to being a sub-par coach was the right way to go. He caught lightning in a bottle last time due to being in a weaker conference. He's being exposed now in a tougher conference. I was all for it.

However, I wasn't a fan at the time of those that used a serious issue(not anyone here... Just from what I remember) to say we don't like this guy as a coach and "oh yeah, he was associated with a molestation... Get him out of here"

Yeah, combining the "awful coach" and "sketchy history" wasn't great, and I'm not really defending it.

But when powerless groups (UT fanbase in this case) go up against power (Haslam and his little world), sometimes the dirty comes out, and I'm not going to fight that either, because when you're underarmed (=powerless), you might have to start flinging barnyard dung if it's all you've got. If we lived in a rational world where people on opposite sides of a debate had equal power, and therefore legitimacy/ voice/ ability to make changes, I'd be all over requiring people to behave themselves. But we aren't there now, and I can understand the "and FURTHERMORE" arguments being brought up.

Ironically, it allowed national press *cough Dan Wolken cough* to characterize us as a bunch of redneck ignorant prudes. (As if objecting to child sexual abuse is restricted to the rural South. He's such a pitiful excuse for a journo.) Lazy, sloppy journalism covering an issue - fan revolt against horrible interference by athletic boosters - you'd think that would pique the interest of a journalist with intellectual curiosity, but... I guess not.

edit for sloppy control-C, control-P

James Franklin would have also. If he’d been hired here, all the story of the Vandy rape case would be exposed.

Oh,I know you weren't defending it. While I respectfully disagree about the "and furthermore" to an extent,I get how people can go that route. I definitely agree as people,we're not on equal footing in regards to debating and sometimes it's that reason that things are discussed the way they are.

It's also very sickening that some so called journalist would stoop to such a pathetic stereotype like that. Sounds like a bit of a weirdo if you ask me.

Interesting little conversation so I appreciate it. I think overall the right decision was made and now almost 6 years later, it's proven to have paid off for Tennessee's football program. Meanwhile for Schiano at Rutgers, not so much.
