Our Scholar of the week is going to Volinbham.

And I'll start him off with these questions:

Volinbham, who is your favorite writer?

What is your favorite book?

What have you learned from your experiences here at Volnation?

Also can you explain from Andy Griffith Season 1, where the courthouse windows are from the inside of the building and where the door by the left cell leads?

When you say "Hat, who is your favorite writer?" I'm guessing you mean me :p

Anyhoo.

Favorite writer is Charles Bukowski followed closely by John Steinbeck.

Favorite book is Post Office by Bukowski; favorite story is Tortilla Flat by Steinbeck.

My experiences at the VN have shown me that an online community can be a real community. It has also shown me the power of a common connection (Vols sports) and how that is enough to bring a very diverse group of people together.

Can't help with the Andy Griffith stuff - I know there are windows on the wall with the front door (on the side with Andy's desk) and I believe on the wall behind his desk (venetian blinds).

volinbham, let me ask you this:

Three salesmen are on a trip and decide to stop at a hotel for the evening. They go to the clerk to ask for a room. The clerk tells them $30, so each hands over a ten dollar bill.

They go up to the room.

A few minutes later, the clerk is feeling guilty that he did not give these poor working guys a break and calls the bellhop over, gives him five one dollar bills, and says take this up to the three salesmen.

The bellhop starts up the stairs and on his way thinks, how are they going to split $5 three ways, so he keeps $2 for himself and gives the salesmen back $3.

Each of the salesmen gets back a dollar. That means that each has spent $9. Times three that is $27. the bellhop has $2. That's $29. Where did the other dollar go?

I am teaching at a 4 year school (UAB). I love it. My job is 40% teaching; 40% research and 20% service/administration.

If he wants to teach at the university level - he should definitely get his PhD. The pay differential between Masters and PhD is huge (typically double or more depending on field of study). He should only do so however if he is inclined to do at least some academic research. Publish or perish exists at various levels but at a school like MTSU, he would have a similar split to mine.

I'd be glad to talk with him about it.

Of the original $30 - the house has $25, the salesmen have $3 (collectively) and the hop has $2.

The salesmen put in $27 - $25 to the house and $2 to the hop.

So in your well studied opinion, what percentage does marketing play in the decision to buy?...

As one Marketing scholar said - Good marketing makes sales superfluous.

Marketing at its core is about identifying a group of customers to be served, understanding their needs/wants and designing a solution (product/service) for their needs that satisfies them better than their other options for meeting those needs.

Get that right and your/product service is the natural choice for some customers.

In my world, marketing and advertising are almost the same term. While you gave me a super answer, you really didn't answer my question.

I bet you are a great professor...:p

Dodging a question is always easier than saying you don't know...:)

Here's another diversionary tactic:

It depends...

Clearly a tactic like shelf placement works for impulse buys at the grocery store.

Carefully timed ads can get people to buy (e.g. Dominos ad on TV during sporting events)

Creating scarcity through temporary price drops, limited quantities, etc. can motivate purchases as well.

Put another way, some marketing tactics can push someone to make the buy decision at a particular moment but they have to be close to that decision already.

Smart marketing assumes you can't make someone buy something they don't need...

guess thats why Wal-Mart posted 10 billion in clear profits last year. Everyone hates the company but the profits don't just fall from the sky.

I am currently completing my Masters with an eye on a PhD. I have been offered a job teaching at the High School Level while finishing my degree. Is it better to coninue working in my field or go get teaching experience? My ultimate goal is to teach at a 4 year school

What's your field? If it's not education I'd probably go with discipline specific experience - it will be more relevant to the degree AND make you a better teacher. I haven't taught high school but would imagine it's night and day compared to teaching college (college is probably easier).

I am in criminal justice/public safety. I have about 5 years of "real world" experience, and plan on looking for a job at a CC when I get my masters.

CC will be closer to a 4 year teaching experience. If you are going PhD I would still think experience will help more if you can diversify that experience either up the chain or in other variations of the same field.

Your core asset as a professor is you knowledge base and you will be expected to grow that and share that in the classroom.
