Scotty Hopson update
<DIV class=body>
Another update on the recruitment of University Heights Academy senior star
Scotty Hopson, who had committed to Mississippi State but didn't sign with the Bulldogs.
The latest chapter in the ongoing saga about Hopson has been: "Is Kentucky recruiting him?"
The Wildcats have sent several coaches, including
Billy Gillispie, to watch Hopson play in a number of games throughout the season. Gillispie was at a recent game in the All "A" Classic when the Blazers played at Eastern Kentucky University.
And in recent days, there have been reports on the internet that Gillispie has talked with Hopson's mother (Jeanette) or Scotty Hopson. But when I called the house tonight for an interview to get an update on the situation,
Jeanette Hopson refuted those claims.
"No, no, no, no, no," she said. "Coach Gillispie has not called here. Not one time."
But Jeanette Hopson went on to explain that she has talked to UK assistant coaches on several occasions this week, the first on Monday (the day before UK played at Vanderbilt).
"The bottom line is on Monday night an assistant called me and said Gillispie was going to call me on Tuesday, but there was no call," the mother said. "Another coach called (Tuesday) afternoon and said he would call before the game and there was no call. Then they called and said he was going to show up at school on Wednesday on way back from the game. But I guess after they got beat so bad, he wanted to get back home. I have seen him three times (this season) and not one time has he come up and said anything. We haven't had any contact with him."
Jeanette Hopson also said she thinks Gillispie "might be getting pressure to recruit Scotty," and also noted that "the ball is in his court now."
"A lot of people kept telling me that it's ashame that they're going to let Scotty get out of the state, but what are you going to do?" she said.
The mother also confirmed that the family has been telling coaches who have been calling that "we're focused on a state championship and not going to do anything right now."
