Holy Crap. Asserting some authoritay.
I obviously don't want players hurt and this type of thing should be outlawed, but it seriously feels like when I'm watching football in thirty years I might be watching guys wearing padding that resembles the giant hot dog guys that run around the ballpark.
What do you do if you're the Saints?
Do you toss Payton and go ahead and find your new guy? Do you let someone come on for the year and see how he does and make a decision then? Or do you just find someone to fill in and let them know that they have one year and one year only?

Interim or completely new hire.
Just depends in how much faith/good favor the saints organization still see towards Payton, as well as to what degree the organization feels with regards to if this is the kind of thing they want to/feel they need to distance themselves from.
My guess is him winning a SB bought a lot of good favor.
Just look at how fast the NFL seems to move. They're going to be losing a guy for a year- even if the interim coach is of the same staff/tree as Payton, they aren't going to run things the same way. Those players are going to be under a new system for a year, then would have to go back to Payton. Is it still worth it? It may be, and I'm not in their front office, so I don't know.
On the other hand, you could go ahead and get a new guy, clean your hands of this stuff, and begin working towards the future.
