SEC Regular Season Title versus Elite Eight Appearance

Would you rather win the SEC regular season title or make the Elite 8 and lose?

It does when someone says definitively that post season success is greater than regular season success.

Your scenario of UK being the first number one seed to lose to a 16 seed had nothing to do with the topic.

When is it not? Do you remember the Bills or Cowboys from the 90s?

We aren't talking about championships. To your point though, I don't remember anything about any team that lost in the divisional rounds in the 90s. Much like no one will remember anything about a team that loses in the Elite 8, 10 years from now.

Without googling it tell me the last 10 SEC regular season champs in basketball.

I will remember this team if they get to the Elite 8.

I'm pretty sure Tennessee fans would remember, because it would be the first time in the Elite 8.

If Tennessee had made it in the last 10 years I'd be able to name the year.

Just like I'm sure you can name the years Tennessee won the SEC. Obviously, Tennessee fans are going to remember everything about Tennessee. I don't know what you're trying to prove.

The point is, making an Elite 8 is a step the program has never taken. I would like to see that happen over winning an SEC title at this juncture.

You're putting the Elite 8 on a pedestal. Making the Elite 8 one time is not a big deal. It may seem that way because Tennessee has never done it, but it's not. No one cares about who made the Elite 8 by the second week of April.

It's not so much that making one Elite 8 is that awesome...it's more the breaking new ground for the program. Advancing farther than any Tennessee team has before. Dickie V might not remember, but Tennessee fans will, and isn't that what matters?

blah blah blah If you don't think an Elite eight apeparance would be better for the program than a conference title. blah blah blah

Oh yes. Im sure if we would have beaten Ohio State things would be soooo much better right now. Actually, no. It wouldn't. Everything would be exactly the same. Whether you're willing to admit it or not.

As someone who was around during the 16 team NCAA tournament era, when only the ACC had a conference tournament (which most of the rest of the leagues thought was kinda silly at the time) - conference championships became very important to me. Trophies with your name engraved on it, listings in record books, etc. I personally enjoy when we play in the NCAA tournament and the further we go the more times I get to keep watching the Vols play. But whether we lose in the first round or lose in the finals, we still didn't win anything and in the long run, I cherish the conference championships more. I have started to sway toward the conference tournament championship becoming more memorable to me than the regular season championship. We still only have one of those since it was reinstated in 1979.

I know I, as well as many other, Tennessee fans wouldn't get sick when we think about that game.

Or that our next opponent would have been a Memphis team we had already destroyed once that season.

Even if we've been to the Elite 8, I'd rather go there than win an SEC title. I'm sure UK fans would agree.

I just know that the joy I feel from winning the 08 SEC title comes nowhere close to the sickness I feel from losing that 07 game to Ohio State...or by getting blown out of the water by Louisville in the 16 later that year.
