Vol fans, If an SEC team is playing an OOC team (i.e. Bama vs. Penn State this year) would you go for the SEC team? I know I would, becuase if they win it means more if we beat them. I've heard people say they hate Bama and Florida so much they would never go for them no matter what. Doesn't make much sense to me, because it means something to be competing in the best conference in college football. Just want to know why people would think differently.

I wouldn't cheer for Bama because the better and stronger they are, the worse off we are. Florida and Alabama winning national titles is not good for Tennessee. Losing those sort of games would be better for us.

Instead of pulling for Bama or FL to win, I pull for their opposing OOC team to lose. It settles my stomach a bit.

I've never understood the SEC phenomenon of cheering for your rivals, thus hurting you. I am going to the Colorado-Georgia game, and I am going to root like hell against Georgia.

Exactly. A rival is a rival...
Were yall rooting for Kentucky basketball against West Virginia? Didn't think so.

Okay, I get the point you guys are getting at, but imagine if all the teams in the SEC lose every OOC game, bowl games etc. and TN beats them all. Nobody is going to care. SEC champ no longer equals National champ becuase nobody cares about the SEC anymore. I mean would you rather beat a bama team ranked #1 or a bama team that is unranked?

How does an SEC team winning an OOC game hurt us? The SEC east champ is decided on games you play in conference.

It depends on the state of UT football. If we've beaten are rival or have a good chance of beating them, then I pull for them. That makes our victory even better. If we've lost to them or will probably lose to them, then I root for them to fail.

Always SEC, Alabama beats VT pretty easily, almost loses to UT, then VT easily beats UT. Don't really know how UT losing to VT helped Bama, I always perfer SEC teams to win when facing other conferences. As far as helping a win brings in more money to the conference, so thanks to the NC winners of the past 4 years.

a good Saturday of football is UT winning and everyone else losing. Our rivals winning titles does nothing to help UT

I should've clarified that to season games. Bowl games I generally pull for the conference and always pull for rivals in the NC. I think this year my hatred for Teblow and the Gators prevented me from rooting for them. But in the past I have pulled for Florida.

My dream season. UT goes 14-0. Everyone else we play goes 13-1. I know it won't happen, the 13-1 part that is.

I root for the outcome that most helps UT. If we're chasing something and a national ranking, then we need our opponents to look stronger. If the games are immaterial to our team, I root against our enemies as loudly as possible.

That's how I am about it, I like our strength of schedule to be stout.

Of course you root for your conference. You also root for your sec east foes to lose enough in conference to get you to Atlanta
Rooting against the SEC is like screaming loudly pre snap when we are on offense it shows who the idiots are.

As a fan of one of your rivals to the immediate south, I came to the realization two years ago that my desires for bad things (losses, etc.) to happen to other SEC teams was a direct result in my lack of confidence in our coaching staff. I thought that the only way we could compete with teams like FL, GA, TN, LSU, and AU in recruiting was if they had misfortunes and came back to our level. It was pretty sad now that I look back. As others have said, if everyone in the SEC were as mediocre as we were, we would be the Big East. :)

Don't get me wrong, I may still chuckle when I see our rivals step in 'stuff', but I neither root for it nor crow about it. I want to us to win all our games, but it is more fun when our traditional power rivals are in their traditional positions. Here's to that happening soon!

Nice. Glad to see most of you realize the importance of the sec being an elite conference.

Sorry but I hate Bama...Always have and always will....But I at least have some respect for what they have accomplished...I despise Florida and hope that bunch loses every single game for all of eternity and that bandwagon fan base falls into the ocean and drowns...I will root for whoever is playing those guys....Rooting for other SEC teams out of loyalty to the SEC is ridiculous...But to each their own...I personally LOVE watching those teams get beaten.

Tn is by far my favorite team, but they play in the SEC. So, if you aren't cheering for TN then you need to be cheering for the SEC.

It is different in basketball because conferences don't hold as much weight as they do in football, IMO. I like the idea that every other conference fears/hates the SEC because of success, and if the SEC could go undefeated every year in OOC games I would be happy.

Don't get me wrong though. I would love for the Co-Ga game to go 9 overtimes just to help TN chances against them the next weekend, but I would prefer that they win. lol

Edit: if you think SEC loyalty is dumb would you prefer TN play in the Big East? Do you not think that TN being in the SEC helps our recruiting and national exposure? Do you think that if the SEC went downhill it would ultimately hurt TN?

Of course it would hurt tn. People seem to fail to understand this. I hate florida and I especially hate bama with a passion. This isn't about them. This is about tn. I want tn to be successful. In order for that to happen the rest of the sec has to be. Look at boise state for a quick example.

I NEVER cheer for any sec team in any situation. I pull for a team not a conference.
