Because the reason the players are there is for school, then sports. He is employed by the university. It doesn't look great for your college baseball coach to not have a college degree, especially who has been coaching college baseball for a while.

There's a sense in which I agree with both of these views. As it regards coaching baseball, Dave Seranno is an expert in his field, meaning he is far beyond a legitimate selection as coach. He might've been the most qualified guy we looked at, I don't follow baseball enough to know. At any rate, teaching people who have a higher degree than you is not unheard of. Saul Kripke comes to mind.

But if he's going to be mentoring college students, it'd be nice for him to have shared experiences, and it also looks better for a PR standpoint if he has a degree.

So, hire him now (as we did), and say something to the effect of zjc's suggestion.

Just saw his head coaching record. Tis impressive.

I too hope there is something in there about the degree. But, there's no doubt about his ability to put a product on the field.

But in all seriousness, ignoring the degree factor and all that, is there a better, more proven coach that you could get? This is a great job by Cronan/Cheek, or whoever made the hire.

The funniest thing about this hiring is that the thread that announces his hiring is on page 5 of the thread.

But, the hat thread discussing the hire is on page 24.

Go back and check what happened when we hired Dooley or Martin.

Gotta love volnation.
