I kinda consider a Gruden hire a pipe dream...it's great to speculate and to dream but the chances of landing him are not as good as some might believe.

If we are shooting for long shots and throwing out ideas of crazy contracts...why would Vols fans rather have Gruden over Petersen?

Obviously, Gruden does have a tie to Tennessee but I see him staying in the big leagues. Why would he make that move? He would have to recruit year round as well as coach.

Gruden has never been tested at the college ranks, Petersen has. Petersen has proven his worth by coaching modest talent to superior results. Wouldn't he make a better choice for coach? Wouldn't you rather throw 5 million his way? Just a thought.

Gruden. Peterson is a strong candidate but would not be the best recruiter out there. Gruden is a celebrity and a winning coach. Recruits would flock at the mention of his name. And we all know that the best recruits would make winning at UT happen......soon.

1a. Gruden
1b. Petersen

They would both be awesome hires and I would renew my season tickets if either were hired.

Gruden but just barely...Petersen is the real deal...He could recruit big time at a school like UT...I'm sure not many big recruits want to spend 4 years in icy cold Idaho...He gets the most out of what he gets...Hell of a coach...I'd do back flips over either one

Gruden and its not close. Patterson closer than Peterson but doesn't matter it's gonna be Gruden!

Gruden would be awesome, but maybe too awesome? Petersen probably wouldn't leave for the NFL, whereas that would be the constant question with Gruden. On the other hand Gruden would make us a national brand again immediately and we would be landing top recruiting classes. I think Petersen can recruit but maybe not that well. Of course, I know Gruden can coach talented players, but on the other hand, Petersen gets the maximum out of his players. I think I'd prefer Petersen, but barely.

Look at LSU, UGA, etc. If you sign top recruits, your program is going to be pretty good regardless of the x's and o's. TN needs some stud players - best way - GRUDEN.

I heard that under Fulmer, but we had so many top recruits that didn't pan out. It's great to get top players but you have to coach them up and develop them (see also: Ron Zook, or what Urban Meyer is doing with Ohio State this year). That said, you have to have great recruits to win big. I think Petersen could get great recruits. But, probably not as great as Gruden.

There's going to be a lot of disappointed Vol fans when Gruden doesn't even give UT the time of day...

Lot of disappointed people when Petersen says no, too. Ditto Patterson. He's already pulling in $4 - $5M at TCU, they'll match the offer to keep him, and Arky's in a much better position than we are to win a bidding war, if that's what it takes. Reality bites.
