Seriously..would you rather have Gruden or Petersen?

Lot of disappointed people when Petersen says no, too. Ditto Patterson. He's already pulling in $4 - $5M at TCU, they'll match the offer to keep him, and Arky's in a much better position than we are to win a bidding war, if that's what it takes. Reality bites.

So, take Gruden, Petersen & Patterson out of the mix. Oh, and I saw the poll somewhere on this site that says 92+% of the Vol fans don't want Smart.

I'm having a hard time seeing any realistic home-run hires out there...

Patterson make like $3.2M.

I'd be happy with Patterson, Peterson, or Gruden. I'd pick either Patterson or Peterson first for the simple reason that coaches who win consistently at one level often win consistently at the next level, i.e. Urban Meyer or our own Bruce Pearl (I know, I know different shaped ball); and I do consider the SEC the next level for both those guys. There is a greater difference in NFL to NCAA than from one level of NCAA to the next. Having said that: Gruden would have an immediate recruiting impact. I'd say he's worth 2 years worth of great recruiting automatically before performance starts being the bigger factor than notoriety. He seems pretty strong on Xs and Os, but who knows how that'll translate. I THINK it would work out well, but I believe that Peterson is more of a sure thing and Patterson slightly more than that.

Gruden - Recruiting/Coaching
Petersen - Coaching
Strong - Defense
Malzahn - Offense

Not:
Fulmer
Sanders
Majors
Cutcliff
Smoky
John Ward (sorry)
Petrino
Smart (at least I would have to be talked into liking it)

Strong - Defense? Not in the same sentence at Louisville. #37 in total defense and #46 in scoring defense against a weak Big East schedule. Now has 3 recruiting classes playing for him.

Peterson - Boise. Nuff said.

Mahlzhan - Take. In 2-3 years after posting good seasons as a HC. Not ready yet.

Patterson - Strong take. Strong history of beating good BCS teams. 11 bowls in 12 seasons as a HC. Won a Rose Bowl and has a 7-4 record. DC before becoming HC. Improved the program to the point of taking to the Big 12. Makes more out of less.

Golden - Take. Still has more to prove but obviously has the moxie and recruiting ability. Makes more out of less.

Smart - No way. No more Sabanites or Bammers or Dawgs.

Gruden, Gruden, Gruden. If no, Stoops.

Gruden is far more realistic than Petersen for a number of reasons.

1. Petersen has zero connections to the Southeast.
2. He has only coached one year East of the Mississippi.
3. Remember Justin Wilcox? His former DC? He went back West and said the SEC was far too "cutthroat" for his liking.
4. He makes $2 million in Boise and it increases each year.
5. He turned it down last time.

Gruden and even Patterson are more realistic. The guy turned down $4 million from UCLA.

Gruden would be the equivalent of a college basketball team hiring Phil Jackson. It's an instant game changer for the program and a massive upset of the status quo.

Giving Gruden way too much credit.

I kinda consider a Gruden hire a pipe dream...it's great to speculate and to dream but the chances of landing him are not as good as some might believe.

If we are shooting for long shots and throwing out ideas of crazy contracts...why would Vols fans rather have Gruden over Petersen?

Obviously, Gruden does have a tie to Tennessee but I see him staying in the big leagues. Why would he make that move? He would have to recruit year round as well as coach.

Gruden has never been tested at the college ranks, Petersen has. Petersen has proven his worth by coaching modest talent to superior results. Wouldn't he make a better choice for coach? Wouldn't you rather throw 5 million his way? Just a thought.

Gruden is about to skeet all in Saben's bowl of Wheaties.

Soon

Gruden, he would be a rock star on the recruiting trail and would recruit top offensive talent to Tennessee. He would recruit top defensive talent as well. Important is that he would be a great teacher of the game.

You can count on rock star status for maybe 2 years, then on-field success will outweigh persona.

Petersen's coaching lineage already speaks volumes. Wilcox and Brent Pease...people raid that program for talent night and day and it's largely paying off. He is the real deal. I think he understands the recruiting process better than most...he looks for players that he needs to work in his system and that he can coach up. Sometimes the best athletes don't turn into the most coachable, best players (see: Kiffin, Lane). Petersen's teams are disciplined, play smart, and they are pretty aggressive and physical. They are just as likely to line up and run over you (see: Martin, Doug) as they are to run a trick play.
