George Carlin had a way of putting stuff all back in perspective. You brought up a lot of the things that have made me believe much of our downturn started with the antiwar protests of the 60s - probably even more than the earlier civil rights protests. The antiwar protests grew into just protesting in general - pretty much anti civility, whereas the earlier civil rights protests were more focused. Now we see the merger - one supposed abuse just opens the door for mayhem in general.
I just happened to remember Martin Luther King was assassinated in April of 1968. That caused a lot of burning looting and civil unrest for a couple of months.
