Should Clowney sit?

I was just about to post that this type of hype for an underclassman isn't seen very often in the nfl.

That's true also. We aren't talking Tiny Richardson, who has the potential to be a first round pick but needs to prove himself more. Clowney is already the best defensive player in the country.

Considering their best alternative is to train on their own for 3 years and pray for a combine invitation, I think they are actually getting a lot in return for playing for the universities. Is playing a game for millions of dollars some sort of innate right for all people of exceptional athletic ability regardless of their age or the rules of the only for-profit business organization that would employ them?

I'm not saying the kids are getting nothing in return. However, they are getting screwed. They make millions for the university, but get little in return for their efforts.

Not sure I get it. Why is a football player that blows out a knee more important than a lacrosse player that does? Or a golfer or a cross country runner or etc? Because football is a more popular spectator sport?

Aside from Duke University, I don't see much CC, Golf, or Lacrosse gear for any university being sold or being sported. That's because those sports make very little, if any, money for the university. When it comes down to it, this is all about money. Those sports generate very little revenue.

Clowney is the first consensus #1 sophomore since the world started taking football injuries seriously. The disastrous injury to his teammate, who also would have been a high first round pick as a sophomore and who lost probably $15-20 million dollars because he wasn't eligible, underlines it. You understand that football and its injuries has sort of become a topic in the last few years, right?

Can't Clowney get a large insurance policy against a career ending injury? I thought all potential draft picks did this in college? If he is the projected #1 pick, he could insure himself for much more than the average policy, can't he?

He can, but I'd be surprised if he could get one for the full value of what he could make over his career, or even his rookie contract for that matter. Somebody earlier mentioned other athletes having $5M policies, but even if he had to collect on that, it wouldn't be 10% of what he'd make playing in the NFL.

I agree he probably can't get a policy for full one year salary replacement (or it would be outrageously expensive) but if other atheletes have 5M policies, then a potential 1st pick should be able to increase that to maybe 10M.

I wonder if Clowney and Spurrier agree that he sit out some of the nonconference games. Why play if it is a given that your team will win and getting your backup some experience helps the team?

An article earlier in the thread seemed to indicate that Clowney's likely to get an insurance policy for $5m. Maybe that's as much as anyone will underwrite; maybe the premiums for any more than that are outrageously expensive and Clowney's family can't afford it. Either way he will be assuming about $15 million of risk in order to play for South Carolina this season.

Haha I guarantee you many great Soph players have discussed this with their advisers. The media would tear him up and he'd be viewed selfish, coward etc if he sat. He would suffer by skipping this season and he knows it. If it would be no big deal many other players, especially RB's would have been doing it for years. There's a reason none have.

Do you think he would be number 1 if he sat out next year beef

No I don't. I think it would be a public relations nightmare for him just like it would for other players and that's one of the main reasons players don't sit. If it wouldn't be an issue others would've done it before especially RB's.

I hope he plays. I enjoy seeing great players be great. I couldn't blame him though if he did decide not to play next season. Especially when he watched a teammate who would probably been a top 10 pick this year have a potentially career ending injury. Easily the most dominating DLineman since Suh. Even if he doesn't play he could still be number 1 overall. He can't get any higher by playing. Question is, Is the risk of slipping from 1 to 11 by sitting out greater than the risk of bye bye football career from injury.

The only people that would have any issue with it is USCjr fans. This guy isn't a Rhode scholar & his path to the NFL was paved a long time ago.

Didn't work out for Maurice Clarrett or Mike Williams. He needs to play and play hard. If you play tenatively then you get hurt.

How do you know Clowney isn't smart? Also I have no issue if he sits. I just think it would be a big mistake on his part. The media would destroy him.

He took the sat with a Tudor because he supposedly has a learning disability. His admission requirements were a tad lenient because of this & the argument everyone should have the opportunity for a college education.

How did 15th century English royalty help him with the SAT?

There are thousands of people who struggled with school and taking tests who became very successful businessmen/women. It's buffoons like you who assume because a kid isn't great at testing he's dumb. You have no idea his background or anything else about him. People like you who assume bad things and have no issue bashing kids make me sick. You and your ilk are pathetic.

Lol. Wall Street is littered with dyslexic people I'm sure. You don't know what I know for the record. I'm guessing you were a bad test taker aka moron.

If you think anybody that's gonna make millions before they play a down in the NFL cares what the media thinks you're an idiot to begin with.

No dumb ass. His marketability would take a tremendous hit. Again, why in the hell do you think players don't sit.

Also a funny thing, my spell check didn't change tutor...
