Should you have to provide a government ID, for age verification purposes, to access internet pornography

My knee-jerk is yes, you should need ID to access pornography.

But I would be interested in data to see the affect on kids and society to form a reasonable opinion.

I don't want kids viewing porn. But i don't want governmental limitations and rules, especially where parents should be in the driver's seat.

I’m inclined to say no as I view the primary responsibility here being with the parents. If they don’t know how to setup their web browser controls then get somebody to do if for them or don’t have it. But FFS don’t use ignorance of parents as another excuse for more government intrusion.

Nope because if they take this millimeter then they will want a kilometer. Should just go after whoever is making it free.

I am pretty sure most IPs have controls you can set online through their website. its not like the old days to block sites.

Yep. The controls have evolved to the point that using ignorance of the parents on managing their children’s web access isn’t a valid excuse to infringe on everyone further.

I will also say no. not the governments job. and this is just going to create a worse problem.

VPNs, smaller/sketchier sites, and then borrowing mom/dad's ID. if you can't see how that goes bad, I don't know what to tell you.

also curious about how they would enforce this? Scan in your ID to a porn website for them to store and or pass on to the government in some type of compliance report.... that seems secure

I think in Utah you have to scan your id every time you use a site but not sure

I am skeptical of the supposed intent. I think the true goal of these legislators is to shut these sites down.

I award you 10 volnation bucks for working in the word Jerk in your response, and it being both appropriate and clean, in a thread about pornography

100% they're goal is to shut them down. If it protects just 1 child...
Honestly, I think their goal is to create a database on people that view porn so that down the road that can be used against them. They could easily shut the porn sites down if they wanted to do it.

It shouldn’t be up to the government. Hell, I’m not even sure it should be up to the parents.

Set the precedent for "Now who really is against children not seeing porn?" by government watchdog action and wait and see who else is next. Safe money is on anything to do with guns. Bad parenting is a terrible excuse for expanding .gov power.
