Show some love for Candace Parker!

The entire argument has been that the WNBA is a terrible product!

Correct.

I don't agree and I'm guessing that the players in the league don't agree.

I am sure you are right. I do not see why it matters what the players think of their own league. There's what, maybe 200 of them? So what?

It is a different game than mens b-ball with a different focus. Just like the NBA is much different than International ball.

This is where your argument breaks down. The game may be played differently because of the natural limitations on the skill levels of the WNBA players. But the game is packaged and presented as though it were the same as the NBA. That may be a large part of what is so annoying about it -- it pretends to be something it is not. Not sure how to change that. Not sure that the players and the true believers would want to. But the consequence is that it falls woefully short of what it tries to be.

I can see the distinction you are making. Can you see the point that singling out the WNBA when so many lousy things are on television seems sexist?

Only if you think that any comment that derides a game played by women means that the person making the comment is sexist. Where your argument breaks down is that we aren't criticizing women, or even women's basketball. We are criticizing the product that is put on television as the WNBA. Its not because its women playing it. Its because its bad.

Can you also agree that just because you don't like something that maybe it doesn't mean that it should be taken off television.

Sort of. I can agree that you might like it and that there may be a few thousand others out there that feel like you do. I hope you get to see it as much as you'd like -- in person. But I'll still root for the WNBA to shrivel up and die so I can watch re-runs of the 2001 world series of poker.

It is selfish to say that because you don't respect or enjoy a sport that other's should not be allowed to view it from the comfort of their home.

This is absolutely true. I am being selfish. Your point?

You are being selfish saying what you like. I'm being selfish saying what I like. Now, during a WNBA game on an ESPN channel I happen to have at any given moment probably about 2.5 million people grumbling and agreeing with me whereas you have about 2,000 as happy as you are to watch it.

Eventually, guess who is going to win the practical debate here?

I love to play baseball and go to baseball games but can't stand to see it on TV, especially when it interrupts something else I want to watch. That doesn't mean I think it should be taken off for nobody to see.

I would agree with the theory here, except that the number on my side of the fence when they are showing a WNBA game so outweighs the number on your side during a baseball game.

I'd love to see the analytical data that provided you with your statistical facts. Do you really think the NBA would waste it's money if as many people agreed with you as you think? People may agree that the WNBA should be better but I seriously doubt that they want it removed from television. You should work for the FCC if you are so worried about what is on the air. If you don't get enough cable channels to watch your WSOP reruns then maybe you should contact your cable company or get a DVR so you can record all of the episodes that come on at 2 am. I'll take watching the WNBA any day over watching Phil Helmuth whine like a schoolgirl.

I admit I am guessing as to the numbers. I am also guessing that the WNBA loses money.

Do you know one way or the other whether they make or lose dough?

They have hemorrhaged money for the first 10 years of league, but I saw something the other day saying that there was a possibility of them actually breaking even this year. I don't think the NBA really cares though.

implying I'm gay or stupid undermines your entire ridiculous argument.

Your absurd misplaced pride in a basketball player from UT is just childish. Your foolish point that my dislike for the WNBA is sexist is absolutely correct vis a vis basketball. I don't care to ever again watch women play basketball. Beach volleyball - I'd much rather watch womwn than men. Call that whatever you'd like, but get out of the business of calling me gay or stupid.

I sort of enjoy the irony of watching someone blast another guy for being sexist and unenlightened as he hurls insults with gay remarks.

If you call someone gay or stupid you win the debate right there. Right?:whistling:

Seems to be a favorite pasttime of the VN to call Tebow gay, or to refer to UF as the "gators." Not saying that BPV does it -- in fact cannot recall him ever doing so.

But plenty on here have. Where was the outrage then?

I don't use the term "gator" nor do I call anyone gay unless they are. It's just not a pejorative term that I use (but I do use many others).

I don't care who calls one another gay as a joke around here until I am involved. In this case, I was. I would not have cared had he made a one time comment. However, he carried it out about a wedding between me and someone else with whom he was having the debate. I wasn't even involved in the conversation. That's the only reason I even gave it any consideration by mentioning it.

I know. I'm on your side on this one. Not so much because I care one way or the other, but because its just such an adolescent thing to name-call someone rather than discuss the issue.

Frankly, he doesn't want to discuss the issue because the entertainment value of the WNBA is probably negative. His side of the argument is much better when he says I'm not a true fan or don't know basketball or when he's simply calling me gay.

The anonymity of the message board strikes again, right?

I generally don't care but when talk starts about me having to wear pink at my gay wedding because I'm such a slut is just too weird/bizarre to ignore.

Right. I mean given your sluttiness and your gayness, I'd expect you to wear red velvet.

I have no clue if they make money and I don't really care. I would assume that they come close to breaking even. They get to piggy-back off of NBA franchises and I'm sure that cuts down on their operrating costs. Also according to RasputinVol the best player in the league is making 40k. That's laughable and tells me that the WNBA certainly isn't very profitable if his statement is true.

Once again, I doubt the NBA would put up with losing large amounts of money in supporting the women's league. The increase of female interest in basketball as a whole will hopefully offset any losses the NBA might take. They need all of the momentum and good press that they can get after the referee scandals. Even if the WNBA is a charitable venture I don't care and I will still occasionally watch if it is a playoff game or CP is playing. I have no interest in going to a game unless they have an exhibition at the O-dome so watching on TV will be the only way I'm exposed to it.

So should I call you homophobic then? I would think someone who is comfortable with who they are would come back with another insult considering that you are so quick to dish them out. Obviously I struck a nerve. Do you think that your sexist comments about women's sports might be offensive to most women and some men? I'm sure Daniel Hood's father also feels that the only value in women's athletics is if they are nearly naked. My pride in Candace Parker is no more absurd or misplaced than any fan's pride in any athlete. The only difference is that I don't discriminate who I give my respect to based on gender. Compare her to elite male athletes if you want but her skills are impressive man or woman. I would love to hear if she has ever beaten her brother in a pick up game.

I enjoy the irony of you assuming that calling someone gay is an insult and criticising me for making "gay remarks" in a debate about sexism. I never said anything about gayness being a negative thing. Your perception of being gay or calling someone gay as a bad thing totally contradicts your point.

Uhh.....I started the thread! You amaze me with how free with the insults you are and then are surprised when you get it back in return. If you are so sensitive then don't be disrespectful in the first place. Otherwise, stop whining.

Go back and read your posts and you tell me who appears to be accusing someone of being gay in an effort to denigrate them.

I understand it's a message board slap fight and you were insulted, just spare me the high and mighty act.

That's funny considering that I was making fun of your high and mighty act by pointing out how it was revealing your prejudices. Don't want you to look like a hypocrite.

in fact, go back and see where the initial insults came from. He got offended that not everyone agreed with the point that we should be proud that CP is a former Vol. The moral high ground was lost then, but you were the only one to resort to sexist and gay jokes.

As to striking a nerve, don't flatter yourself. You've done nothing to support your points that CP is as skilled as men at her level or that she has some enormous basketball IQ. Since you couldn't support those, you resorted to gay comments, which I'm now to understand you meant in a literal way.

Please, you have been disrespectful in every thread that I have commented on. I made no sexist jokes, only commented on how ignorant your sexist comments are. I don't need to flatter myself, your reaction to the insults tells me everything I need to know. Would you rather talk smack to me about bad grammar or your Ivy League education like in other threads? From what I've read you definitely overpaid for your education even if it was free. Lastly, I don't need to prove Candace Parker's basketball skill to you. She proves that every time on the court. I made no claims to her being better than men at basketball. I do feel that she is every bit as skilled as most NBA players but is obviously less athletic.

The gay jokes were not meant to be literal. The gay jokes were mean to insult you but I never said anything negative about being gay. My response was pointing out the flaw in criticizing me for calling someone gay when the person chastising me put their own negative connotations to my comment.
