SI.com - Pearlman on Pat Summitt for Men...

Top tier talent might not want to play for her initially.

They aren't going to want to play for whoever our next hire is, no matter who he or she is, until the NCAA cloud has cleared.

So for now, the relevant question is can we get a coach who can win enough with second tier talent to start getting top tier talent.

The only reason this would not work is that our men could not handle the discipline that Pat requires to play for her.

IF they did, she would be very successful as a mens coach.

Or the fact that no player who isn't 10,000% mama's boy would play for her.

lol - recruits would laugh her out of their living room. Like the above post - the only way a top talent would sign to play for us if is their grandma or mother forced them to sign to play for us.

She is good enough to be sucessful as a men's coach - both recruiting and coaching.

Not really, she has a huge talent advantage on her side in pretty much every game she coaches.

I don't think she would want to do though. It would be step down from where she is. Why go from a top 2 program to a mediocre program?

Only gender biased sports writers think it would be a move up to coach men.

This part is funny.

“Come play for me. I know how to get people into the WNBA!”

Are the x's and o's betrween the two genders in the sport similiar? I know this may come across as a moronic question, but I really don't know much about the strategery (oh yeah, strategery) of each gender's play, if there is any at all.

there is a huge difference...the lady vols can knock down a three pointer and a foul shot, and know how to use the glass. the guys, not so much. :birgits_giggle:

Perhaps if she also offers a guaranteed post college job at the Kroger in addition to the WNBA so they know they'll be able to keep food on the table, it might have some swing.

Just for the record she has never ever been offered the mens job. Even when the men's program was "turriable" and she was winning NC's back to back. Only people who bring this up are the Lenny Dykstra fans over there wear the baby blue..."not that there's anything wrong with that."

I'm aware of the huge talent advantage in every game she coaches. How is that an indication that she can't recruit or coach?

Its not like UT was one of the premiere school before she started coaching here.

She doesn't really have to at this point. It's like being the football coach at Texas - people grow up wanting to play for you. Mack Brown doesn't have to be a great recruiter or coach, and he REALLY wouldn't if he were coaching in a sport as lopsided as women's basketball is.

The fact that Tennessee is one of the few schools in the country that actually gives a crap about women's basketball doesn't make her John Wooden.

I love how Hamilton's job is tied to every hire he makes now, like this guy hasn't screwed up enough already.

First off, Mack Brown is a terrible comparison. Mack Brown was hired into the best football coaching job in the country. Pat Summit created the best women's basketball coaching job in the country. Only Pat Summit actuall has to leave the state to go recruit.

As far as the John Wooden comment, I don't think anyone is claiming she'd win 10 straight men's National Championships. I'm certainly not.

However, saying she cadn't coach or recruit because she doesn't have to anymore is being absurd through trivialization of what she has done. I do think she is a viable coach for a men's team, although again, I don't see why she would or should care about being a men's coach.

I agree. But I'm afraid "the stare" would become a permanent fixture on her face.....

Recruiting classes will tank if we have a girl as a coach.

There is nothing to suggest that she can consistently win games given a level playing field. Her teams don't really have an offense. Players wouldn't respect her. Top recruits would absolutely never come here. People that think the two sports are equal should hope she never tries coaching men.
