Unreal. I wish the Vols running game could struggle and putter around for over 200 yards every week. I definitely could've lived with that against Florida.

35-0 at one point. If those big plays don't happen and the Vols starters remain in the game for longer than 6 minutes into the third quarter, it would've got much worse for Cal. Taking away the big plays, which is a ridiculous concept, Cal still wasn't stopping UT. Instead of being up 35-0 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter, it probably would've taken 6 minutes into the 4th to be up by that much.

how can you criticize or diminish Tennessee's win because of big plays? isnt that what great players do, make big plays? we didnt have to many big plays last year and look what happened. Cal was overrated then and they're overrated now

Given the facts that Lynch did pretty well against our first-team defense, and Longshore looked at least serviceable,
Up to the point where the game got completely out of hand in the middle of the 3rd quarter, I doubt Lynch had 40 yards rushing. I know he only had 5 for 35 at the half.

True the running game did get stuffed a good bit, but to say that we only blew them out because of big plays is a little tough to accept. I guess you're assuming that we wouldn't have been able to actually drive the ball on them?

Those two bone-headed matchups Meach got to his advantage comprised much of our offense. Our rushing attack wasn't even that good, I very explicitly remember our RB's not doing much against Cal's front 7. Hardesty's 43-yard run was a "What the hell were you thinking?" kind of moment for Cal. One long run each for Coker (21 yards in junk time) and Foster (19 yards), other than that it's a constant flurry of 1-3 yard runs. I remember our guys getting stuffed almost all night, they weren't getting blocking and they weren't making plays. And I explicitly remeber coming on this board directly after and many of you expressing concern for our running game, as well which had looked less than stellar. Cal did run fairly well on us, however, as Lynch picked up 74 yards on 12 touches, the majority of which came against our first team defense.

Both of those same problems proved not to be one-time deals, coming again against Florida, as our D had a notably difficult time stopping the run, as Wynn passed the 100 yard mark on 22 carries, and Tebow picked up 29 rushing yards in limited action. Conversely, our two RB's who saw time were averaging about 0.8 yards per carry. All of this is obviously due in part to the offensive line which had not looked good.

Given the facts that Lynch did pretty well against our first-team defense, and Longshore looked at least serviceable, and they kept our rushing offense from doing much of anything, Cal coulda kept up. Alas, a scrub is mistakenly lined up against an all-American. Yes, we still beat the hell out of them. Yes, I know it's called smart coaching to take advantage of such mismatches. Shut up about it. That blowout came off of three plays. Once the other team is forced to stretch out the offense, any decent defense can take advantage of it. Kudos to our D for doing so. But I find myself ill-convinced that we out-played them in every phase of the game. I saw the game with my own eyes, and it simply did not happen.

Luckily for Cal, that game was a slap in the face for the coaches at Berkley on how to line up defensive backs. I guarantee you that Cal would also have been soundly defeated by at least USC, Oregon, UCLA, Washington and Washington State in the Pac if similar decisions were made. Which is why I repeatedly posted that similar decisions in the Pac would place them in the middle at best, if they don't turn it around, which I noted every single time I posted that (tidwell). They haven't made those similar decisions, instead lining up corners where they ought to be and are now clearly reaping the benefits of the talent they have. Longshore is also taking advantage of the diminished ability of Pac-10 DB's and has gone from looking mediocre at best against Tennessee, to pretty darn good against everybody else. Longshore's defense has also kept him from having to stretch out the offense...

Implying that Cal was caught off guard by Meachem's ability is asinine. Do they have films

5 for 35 is still averaging 7 yards per carry, pretty good. He should have gotten the ball, but Tedford's guys hit the panic button a little too early.

This is how I saw the game go down:

Both teams were fairly neck and neck until Cal lines up their d-backs wrong a couple times, Meachem goes. Past this is the standard happening Cal hits the panic button early, stretches out the offense which allows our defensive speed to come into play and keep it from working.

Cal could have prevented the big plays of Meach if they had lined the corners up correctly. Cal does have d-backs who can keep up with him. That happens, Vols continue to drive okay, and a little bit better, but our offensive line getting beat on the run block consistently keeps us from blowing the lead open, and Cal keeps up.

Still, like I said, I know we still blew them out, but saying that we outplayed them in all phases of the game is false. All this is why I attribute the blowout to a couple of catches by Meach. Everything else was an aftereffect.

The cover page of this weeks SI(16 Oct) has the Vols and UGA on it. It's entitled SEC POWER!:dance2: As far as I'm concerned there is NO better FOOTBALL Conference in this land!:salute: SEC RULES BABY! I know there have been years that the SEC sent 7 teams to bowls and only had one winner. I also know that, if I'm not mistaken, that Bama may have the most Bowl wins or does that now belong to a Big 10 team or ACC team. SEC POWER! :salute:

I don't understand. If the point of the cover story is to proclaim the SEC the best of the best, why wouldn't you show the best of the SEC, i.e. Florida? Maybe a shot of Tebow throwing the lob pass? Or one of our three picks?

Just kidding you guys!! Nice cover. I like UT getting good press--- makes our W over you all that much more impressive.

LG -- by that rationale, shouldn't you replace your avatar with a picture of Tim Tebow? I mean, TT is florida's best QB, right?

You have a point there. If I was CL I would be as nervous as a hooker in a convent...

All this talk about a fluke against Cal is one of the biggest reasons I hate to see the second team come in. The Vols should have put up at least 50 on Cal, and please don't try to explain the importance of depth, I already know..

That was my lone slight criticism from that game. I think we called off the dogs a series or two too early. To Cal's credit, they did have a goal line stand that kept the score somewhat respectable.

It would've been extremely ugly if the second team doesn't come in not even halfway through the third quarter.
