SI prediction of 12 team playoffs

Mizzou is a far bigger threat than Florida. Luther Burden would have ranked right behind Nabers and MHII had he been eligible for the draft this year. He's a stud. And Cook is a solid as they come for college QBs.
We don't play Missouri

This is going to be a wild year in college football. New faces in different conferences. Different conference schedules for most of the teams vying for the playoffs. No Saban. Teams going on the road to new stadiums. I expect chaos. I like the Vols chances as much as anybody's. I also expect very few of the pundits predictions to be anywhere close to what the playoffs actually look like.

We hope all that is true. Willie Martinez has a long history of being a subpar coach regardless of what players he has that goes back 20 years. I am firmly in the "believe it when I see it" category with Martinez and his charges.
That’s certainly fair. What sucks is we were starting to see it last year until Hadden went down. With our front 7 the secondary shouldn’t have to make up for other areas so stay healthy and this should be a good evaluation year for Martinez. I tend to agree he’s not good but a few big programs have disagreed with that and hired the dude so we will see.

Nah...being a freshman all american CB in the pass happy PAC 12 equals proven.

This list shows we are third in the SEC in net gain of talent. Most of this was in the secondary

Interesting. How is Mizzou up? I haven’t paid much attention to them so I’m surprised to see that knowing they lost their stud RB.

I comes down to those first 4 games if we come out of that unscathed we are in good shape. But if we overlook NC state and Oklahoma those games could come out badly. Those are not teams to be overlooked. I think we can and should beat them but it’s not a given.
We might even be a dog at OU. Their first SEC game at home against their former QB? Anyone saying that’s an automatic win or writing OU off is mistaken. They do have talent and road games are always tough, especially given the circumstances.

Yeah, OU is a tall drink, especially at Norman. Will be a great game, though.

That's going to be the storyline all season. Tennessee should be a team that's right there in the mix, but there are always a lot of factors that play into it. Should be a fun ride.
Maybe it’s just me, unless you’re a Georgia or OSU fan, college football isn’t the same.

I mean on paper for sure. We could end up a dog to NC state depending on how polls shake out early on. The results of the UTC game are very very important. I am kinda happy we have them as game one because they are less of a full-on cupcake than Kent state. So we can get a slight warmup with them and have an easy week off with Kent State after NC State. Its interesting because I'm of minds I sort of wish we played kent state then UTC than NC state and Oklahoma.. so we get some gelling time. but at the same time NC state is in a very similar situation as us and even arguably will be less aware of who they are week 2 than us. Most of their offense and a lot of their defensive staters will be first-year guys in their system. Their wr rotations run 3 and 4 wide sets fairly often of their top 8 wideouts 6 are transfers or true freshmen (3 of each) starting center transfer, starting and backup QB transfer and true freshman, top 2 rbs both transfers. Te si the weird one they usually either have a guy inline or split out and seem to treat them as totally different positions according to a friend of mine that follows them? They brought in Justin Joly at TE/Y I'm counting him as their starter lol. They brought in 19 transfers (9off, 9 def and a long snapper) and every single one is listed in 2 deep with 9 listed as starters. ( source 2024 North Carolina State Wolfpack Football Depth Chart | Ourlads.com) looked fairly updated and in-depth I looked at their projected depth chart for UT and it looked sensible enough to make me think they might have a clue. 2024 Tennessee Volunteers Football Depth Chart | Ourlads.com

I think the early lin is OU -5.5. At least one of those guys that does the computer simulations a thousand times over has OU -5.5. I’ll take Vols money line .

Agreed. NC State and OU will be tough. I think we find a way in both though.

247 hasn’t updated the talent composite for 2024 so I have to use 2023. We are ranked 16th and NC State is 38th. Obviously they got better through the portal and so did we.

If we struggle with NC State then we have more issues than we thought.

Or it means it’s an early game against a decent opponent and we have a young QB with a lot of new pieces that haven’t fully gelled yet. Or it could mean something else entirely.
