SIAP: Kingston out at USCjr

Would be very surprised. SC needs a proven commodity; they have the resources to go after a good coach with a good track record and of course they have SEC money to do so. Elander would be far too risky. Elander will get his at some point - probably someone at a lower level with less to gamble for his first gig.

Guys like him could be a Richt or maybe a Norm Chow as head man. You never know When they have zero head coaching experienc.
I was thinking this as well. I sure can see Elander getting a chance but most likely a smaller program. I'd definitely think USC would go after a proven head coach. I'd think most successful coaches in other conferences (even Power 5's) would jump at a chance to mix it up in the SEC. Maybe that's biased thinking...but probably not.

This guy must be from South Carolina, he was very articulate with the history and tradition of the program, at the end when he talks about who to hire, he said Ray Tanner needs to call Vitello………dudes living in the past

Yeah...give TV a call...and ask who he thinks Carolina should hire. Actually...I think this is the way Volnation reactions when we have openings too. Indigenous to the coaching search I'd assume.

I think they'll probably reach out to him, but their fans seem mixed on the idea. At the moment, I think they're suffering from the same thing that we went through during the search for Kellie Harper's replacement—they want the most attention-grabbing hire possible to restore their program to its former glory, so hiring a guy with no head coaching experience seems risky. As we all know, what fans want and expect doesn't always align with what's going through the AD's head.

If he's offered and leaves, he's more than earned a shot.

Umm I partially agree but for the record Coach Caldwell has been a high level hire everywhere she has gone. She's gets an A- in the looks department too from what I've seen.

I do not see him leaving here to take a job at a smaller program. Preacherman has stated he makes more than some sec head coaches already at Tennessee. He’ll get a shot at a an SEC/Power 4 school. I do agree though that I doubt it’s USC right now, but who knows for sure..

The basic premise is that South Carolina doesn't want Elander because they want the big name with head coaching experience. I agreed that South Carolina is probably looking for that like Lady Vols fans were but I disagree that Caldwell was not a proven hire.

The proverbial Catch 22..."coach, you need head coaching experience". Hard to get that experience without being "a head coach" i guess. Well, actually he filled in for TV when he was ejected and suspended a few games...surely that counts for something. Yeah i agree with the issue of his salary. Definitely works in our favor.

You missed my point.

I'm assuming you followed the banter here during the search (including from people like me). Everybody and his mother thought we were gonna back up the Brinks truck to hire Becky Hammon or a top-flight coach from another P5 school, and the reality turned out quite a bit different. I'm not dissing Coach Caldwell at all—I'm only saying that most people were expecting a much bigger name.

It feels like South Carolina fans are in the same boat right now. A lot of them are talking about O'Sullivan, Corbin, Lemonis, and others, but I think they may end up with Monte Lee (guy who was fired as Clemson's HC a few years back and served as an assistant under Kingston) or a head coach from a lower profile program. Some of their insiders feel like the search would have to get past Monte to get to Elander, and they don't feel like that's going to happen.

Agreed with the pretension of the fan base as compared to our LV HC search. We’ll have to stand by and see.

FWIW, it's looking pretty likely that USCe will be tapping Monte Lee as their next baseball coach. As I said previously, he was an assistant for Kingston and served as head coach at Clemson for six years before getting fired a few years ago. Also coached at College of Charleston.

Their fans are ... not thrilled. Quite a few of them were very excited at the idea of taking a chance on Elander, but it sounds like they targeted Godwin and maybe a few other established head coaches and got turned down. The idea of settling for a guy who their main rival fired a few years ago is not going over very well.

We'll see if it turns out to be true, but it's not looking very likely that Josh is leaving this year (at least, not for USCe).

So they are firing a coach and staying in house with a coach on his staff. I thought they would at least go after McDonnell…I think he is ready to move on if the job is good enough. Head scratcher

I'm just as miffed as you are. If I had to guess, I bet McDonnell was offered and said no. His name definitely popped up in the discussions I've been reading. I'm wondering if the job has lost some of its luster since Carolina has fallen so far behind and we're getting ready to add two more good baseball schools.

LOL - funny quote from the thread to illustrate how they're feeling:
Maybe when Dawn decides to move on, whenever that might be, we can hire Holly Warlick. She definitely fits the mold of what Ray is looking for. Decent record. Won nothing of substance. Fired from an arch rival.

He was very unhappy with Louisville at the end of last season. Maybe time has healed those wounds. Some people are starting to sour on him and think his best days are behind him. I do not think NIL is helping Louisville at all.

from D1 Baseball:

Dan McDonnell, Louisville

Tom Walter, Wake Forest

Chris Pollard, Duke

Monte Lee, South Carolina hitting coach

Skylar Meade, Troy

Cliff Godwin, East Carolina

Josh Elander, Tennessee

One of the premier assistants, hitting coaches and recruiting coordinators in Division I Baseball, Elander has done an incredible job during his seven-year stint as a full-time assistant on Tony Vitello’s coaching staff. Elander had a successful collegiate career during his days at TCU and has experienced success in his coaching career. If the Gamecocks happen to go to the assistant route, which I don’t think they’ll need to do, Elander would make a ton of sense.

Josh Jordan, LSU

I don’t think McDonnell, Walter, or Godwin leave. I could be wrong.

I applaud them for it. 😂 They're going to cluck around and find out.

I don’t get this hire. I mean, he has what, 6-7 years at most left if things go absolutely perfectly? And then they are right back to the drawing board again. I figured they would go younger, high motor, relentless recruiter type of hire. This feels like a hire made for 2014 college baseball not 2024.
