I don’t get this hire. I mean, he has what, 6-7 years at most left if things go absolutely perfectly? And then they are right back to the drawing board again. I figured they would go younger, high motor, relentless recruiter type of hire. This feels like a hire made for 2014 college baseball not 2024.
I agree. I just want them to (1) stay far away from our assistants and (2) do something unpromising and unexciting. This would meet my two criteria.

Because this is a Vol forum, I have to bring it back to our guy. One USCe fan offered the following about Mainieri's resume:

6 Omaha trips, 10 times to Supers, 21 postseason trips in 26 years at LSU and ND

Tony has 3 Omaha trips, 4 super regional trips, and 5 postseason trips in just 6 full seasons at Tennessee, and he started with a program that had missed the NCAA tournament for 12 consecutive seasons. It's pure insanity.

from D1 Baseball:

Dan McDonnell, Louisville

Tom Walter, Wake Forest

Chris Pollard, Duke

Monte Lee, South Carolina hitting coach

Skylar Meade, Troy

Cliff Godwin, East Carolina

Josh Elander, Tennessee

One of the premier assistants, hitting coaches and recruiting coordinators in Division I Baseball, Elander has done an incredible job during his seven-year stint as a full-time assistant on Tony Vitello’s coaching staff. Elander had a successful collegiate career during his days at TCU and has experienced success in his coaching career. If the Gamecocks happen to go to the assistant route, which I don’t think they’ll need to do, Elander would make a ton of sense.

Josh Jordan, LSU
Godwin always has East Carolina in the hunt for Omaha and he won't be at East Carolina much longer.

According to my gamecock sister, people are not happy at uscjr. Felt like Tanner settled. Only thoughts were that they might get him for a few years to get things settled down. Apparently, gamecocks were going on the cheap and couldn’t get anyone off their list. Age is just a number, but didn’t see them going in this direction.

Altho they seem to be pretty happy about Terry Rooney.

he's been offered Power 5 jobs and never has been inclined to leave. I think he's comfortable at ECU and there's something to be said for that.........
I think that’s one of the best jobs in baseball. You play in a league that you should win most years, thus making the post season is happening most years, you have a crazy fan base and cool stadium, and much less pressure than an SEC or ACC head coach. ECU is my adopted baseball fan team, really like them and root for them unless they happen to play us.

I don’t get this hire for USC.

I ain’t saying it’s great or poor, but they could do worse. I recall lots of folk’s didn’t love the Barnes hire, washed up, post season and all. I am not saying that will happen, just saying I understand it. They have been in a funk since Tanner retired, and I’m good with it, hope it stays that way.

I’ll defer to you on this one then! The only thing that was throwing me off about the hire was his age (6-7 years older than Rick was) and that he’s been retired for 3 years. The college baseball, heck the college athletics landscape has changed significantly in those 3 years as well. I’m sure he can adapt and will hire quality coaches though.

Maybe he’s recovered and revived but he looked beat down in that 2021 season despite their better than expected tournament run that year.
