This is a fine example of thinking with emotion. Of course we all want UT to win all its games, but it is not practical. An emotional thinker tends to want consequence for a season that is expected for a program that is still recovering from a decade of terrible decisions. For instance an emotional thinker may say that coach jones should be fired after going a reasonable 5-7 or 6-6 this season. An objective thinker typically thinks logically, realistically, and reasonably. Typically objective thinkers would not call for the head of said coach if he has other things to offer to the program.

A list if you will...
-donors excited for the team again
-season tickets sales on the rise again
-a top ten recruiting class
-another projected top ten recruiting class
-respect for the program has returned
-players showing reasonable improvement
-players showing dedication to the program
-former legendary athletes showing enthusiasm for the coach
-former athletes allowed to attend practice/mentor current athletes
-behavior/conduct of athletes have improved
-etc

Taking these things into consideration, an objective thinker may be able to look past a slightly disappointing 5-7 season for the second season of said coach's tenure.

Thoughts?

Nice post. I'm still not sure how many realize what a deep hole we had to dig out of. Butch has done many things the right way. Time will tell and being patient is hell...we'll get there.:yes:

GO VOLS!

7 regular season wins plus a bowl win and I'm satisfied this year. Those 7 wins could/probably will put us in a good bowl game.

I won't be happy with a 6 win regular season and a trip to Birmingham.

Good points and I agree with many. I do feel, however that we should expect a better season that last year. Our qb's returning have some experience and our wr talent is excellent. Plus we should benefit from having the exact same coaching staff in place. It's just my opinion but... I wont call the season successful unless we win 8 games. We haven't been that far off in recent years. Last year was the worst team we've had since I've been a fan and we still have a reasonable chance to beat Florida and Georgia. I think we should expect to win at least one of those two this year and improve on our record.

If cbj is a great coach we will know it in yr 2. All great coaches may huge strides in yr 2. 8 or 9 wins

If he is avg I believe we will see 5 wins and then he is johnny majors 2.0. Will need yrs of great recruiting to overcome him being avg.

I say if he gets 7 wins that's nice progress and really what i hope hart has set for the target. Any less I'm afraid 8 or 9 wins is all we will see from this staff ever.

Except none of those coaches took over a program that had 3 different head coaches in 5 years, multiple coordinators, systems, attrition, etc. You simply cannot use other programs as a baseline for your comparison since there has literally been no other program that has had this much turnover in a long time, if ever.

Who would have ever thought we would be celebrating a win over S. Carolina like we did last year? Just ready to get back to our normal place, on top looking down. Let's get some wins and they will come.

We lead the all time series by a good margin. :hi:

Because Johnny Majors was "average"? Average coaches do not win National Championships, recruit Heisman winners, and get elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

If we live in a world where Johnny Majors career was average then there is a metric poop ton of coaching trash walking around college football..

Realistic expectations!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is realistic for us, with the fact that so many freshmen will be playing at key positions and our depth has no real experience and the strenght of our schedule, to win 6 or maybe 7 games. Six games is realistic. To win the 7th game, we would have to have a little help.
Maybe the team we play has a key player out due to injury or that team makes a critical mistake along the way. and we win the 7th game.
So, to beat either UGA, USC or Florida and get our 7th (regular season win), we will need help.

We should be improved this year over last. And last year we beat usc, had every opportunity to beat uga, and played our worst game of the season against Florida but still were somewhat in that game. I don't think we need a bunch of breaks to compete with those 3

I don't disagree. I would think that we will have a better season than last year too. I think saying that having an 8 win season in order to call it successful is one win more than I would consider reasonable though. But you may have higher expectations for the team this season than me.

Pretty sure every coach that has won the modern SEC had at least 9 wins by their 2nd season. Take it for what it's worth

How is the weather there in Colorado?

I wouldn't know... Check my name. But I don't have to be in Colorado to spark it up on a recreational basis. It's my version of a cold beer on a Friday night (I don't drink). Haha. Go Vols!

saying they'd be happy with a 6-6 season or something similar. How could anyone be satisfied with losing every single game of consequence? How long have yall been fans? We are still ut! Just because we had a short coaching stint by a pathological liar, followed by a pathological azz hole doesn't undo all the history we had prior to their tenures. Many of our opponets this year have major question marks. We COULD win against uga, uf, usc, mizzou, ou. We SHOULD win all the others. The only team that is far superior to us at this point is bama. And even they aren't as dominate as in years past (who was picking AU to beat them last year at this time). I would be happy with no less than 8 wins. Anything less will be a dissapointment! A year from now we should be happy with no less than challenging for the sec east.[/QUOTE

Florida win > USCe win IMO.....I think it would go further in changing the culture for both players and fans.

I'm happy that you are so confident but if you keep it in a realist mind set 6 wins is what is likely and we can only hope for improvement. I doubt we get 9 but I've been wrong before.

We don't yet have a full season's objective evidence that players recruited and coached by this staff can put together a winning season and go to and win a bowl. ALL we have is the sack full of very positive but subjective indicators and observations that they should do at least that. Highly ranked recruiting busts, injuries to key players, opponents key players playing lights out, ... so, so many things, at least a two deep depth chart with mostly experienced upperclassmen, on and on. Most of which the VOLS don't have.

To predict an 8 win season and an upper tier bowl, and demand that as a minimum considering this IS the SEC is, yep, delusional. Glad my daughter ain't brought someone home like you ......... yet.. ;-)
