Silly Coach Majors

Public figures rarely have privacy. That's just how it is. It would take a lot of patience for anyone in the spotlight.

Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.

Johnny is a good one. He walks a little funny due to that knife in the back.

I hope Johnny lives to see Butch bring the program back to the successful level it was when he was fired. Johnny has always been and always will be one of my favorite Vols.

And, finally, the knife in the back BS urban legend rears it's head. Was wondering how long it would take.

Not at all.. you took my post wrong or I worded it wrong. Johnny brought the program back to national prominence, I hope he gets to see the program being successful again

Wasn't your post that mine was aimed at, Gramps. We've both been around longer than most fans on here. I hope we live to see it return to where it should be. Met Johnny last year while he was still in good health. Hope he keeps on grinding for a long time.

Saw him coming out of a restaurant with his wife and another couple on Bourbon Street the night before the 1990 Sugar Bowl vs Virginia....he was drunker than 3 mops and at least 1 bicycle.

I probably ran into him. But I was drunk as hay-el and didn't even know when midnight hit on New Years.

Long as we're telling Johnny stories, I'll recycle one I told on here a couple years back, with apologies for the length:

Near the end of Johnny's tenure, I was working at a west Knox movie theater and he came in with his wife to see a movie one slow weekday afternoon. During their show we had a power outage and told the few customers they could wait around or we could give them rain checks or refunds. Johnny and wife decided to take their chances with the power coming back on.

With nothing else to do during the outage, most customers and employees (probably less than a couple dozen altogether) stood around and killed time as best they could. I chatted with Coach and his wife a bit and they were both very approachable and friendly (he spoke in a very familiar manner as if you were someone he already knew well), although surprisingly they werenÂ’t approached by hardly anyone else.

Apparently standing around doing nothing was just not his thing though and Johnny started walking brisk laps around the lobby – down one side, across the back hall, up the other side, in front of the concession stand and around again. I must have looked amused or bewildered or something because he glanced over as he passed me on one lap and said, half smiling, “Might as well get some exercise in.” After several minutes of walking he rejoined his wife to nibble popcorn and wait out the outage.

The absolute best part, though, was that shortly after his exercise I was elsewhere in the lobby and turned and noticed that Coach Majors was behind the concession stand refilling his popcorn bag at the popper. We didnÂ’t have any employees back there (nothing really for them to do with no electricity) so Coach Majors was the only one behind the stand. He just filled up his bag and then went back to rejoin his wife. He didnÂ’t look like he was being sneaky or stealing or anything, he was as casual as if he were in his own kitchen. I remember being quite shocked and amused when I first saw him back there but then thought, well why the hell not?

Soon after, the power came back on and everybody returned to their films. I exchanged passing see-yas with Coach Majors and his wife as they left afterward and havenÂ’t seen them since. But the whole experience left me liking him more.

During the Vol Walk before the South Carolina game last October one of my friends nudged me and said, "Look at the guy to your left." and it was Coach Majors standing within an arms length of me...I didn't say anything to him but he jogged toward the stadium after it was over and looked healthy back then. I wasn't aware he had a stroke...Fwiw, I have heard so many drunk Majors stories over the years that if even half of them are true it's a miracle that cirrhosis of the liver hasn't taken him.

My claim to fame with Coach Majors came when I was 9 years old and was at a UT basketball game at Stokely. Was there with my mother, Aunt and Cousin. About 5 minutes left in a close game, and I had to pee so bad I couldn't wait. Of course at 9, my mother had to walk me to the bathroom and wait outside for me like good mom's do. In the bathroom all by myself, and standing at the urinal, and in walked Majors. Didn't give me the 1 urinal buffer as is proper courtesy. Stood right next to me. As he walked in, he said hello young man. I was scared to death and all I could mutter was hi. Finished, didn't wash, and ran out side to see my mom smiling at me and asked if I knew who that was was. Of course I did.

I know what youre thinking..... I'm bigger.. lol.

Coach was a good friend of my wife's grandfather and spoke at his funeral a few months ago. He needed a lot of notes (I probably would too), but seemed to be doing OK. Hopefully you just caught him on an "off" day.

I met Coach one time, wait, maybe it was a movie star, or an astronaut. Some of you guys kill me. Coach has been a great VFL and we all have bumps in our roads and bad days from time to time. People with no fire in their tank never get mad! I love him for what he did for our beloved University as a player, coach, and ambassador! Long live, Johnny!

GO VOLS!!!!!

So as I have posted before I work at the bank where Coach Fulmer banks and I see him frequently. Even posted a picture of the hat he signed for me on here. But I didn't realize Coach Majors comes here too...

The other day he came in right at closing time and I honestly barely recognized him. As many of you know he had a stroke a couple months back and his health is really declining. Anyways, I saw he was wearing his championship ring from Pitt and I asked if I could see it. He smiled and held it up for me and said "this is from a while back. I actually used to coach the University of Pittsburgh. We did a lot of hard work that year." I smiled and said "you did a lot of hard work for us around here too Coach Majors." He smiled and I said "yeah I know who ya are. It's a pleasure meeting you!"

He didn't seem to be all there but it was still fun to meet him. Pray for him VN. I expect he doesn't exactly have a ton of time left.
Maybe he thought you were CPF:)

That would be the last time we go to a Sugar Bowl.

Ran into Coach Majors up in Pittsburgh at a restaurant in the mid 90's. We went over, said hello, and told him we were from Knoxville and were big fans of his time/era at UT. He was extremely happy to talk to us. Pretty cool moment.
