Amazing that he assumed he wouldnt be known. Shows humility.Great story. I thought his health was ok for his age. Hate to hear he is declining. Grew up with him as . Got to meet him iin 85 and 91. I would suggest he one of top 3 most influential people in UT football history.

I would put that in order as:

1/General Neyland
2/John Majors
3/Peyton Manning

Honarable mention would be Reggie White and Phillip Fulmer...

if that championship ring only had a T on it vs a P. Imagine the possibilities?......

It should have. Woodruff naming Battle as coach over Majors in January of 1970 was a set back for Tennessee athletics. Johnny had already turned Iowa State around and they were at the bottom of the college football world at that time.

sounds like some dementia. You just have to work around it with people who are losing their memories.

I rewatched this video.... I was at the game as a Freshman, watched the show the next day and even have the Program from the game...somewhere. What I didn't remember is what a big part of that game James Berry was. Sure Hubert Simpson had 4 TDs, but Berry was there running and blocking. James Berry---VFL.....as well as his 3 sons.

Anybody else beside me remember transition from Puuuuuki to Noooooonan? That was a bit before the WOOOO in Rocky Top.

The very first time I met Coach, he was with an entourage as he was heading up to the pressbox a few minutes prior to the start of the '79 O&W game (his coordinators were on the field coaching the two squads). There were about 150 of us students jammed up at the gate closest to the elevator, with the lone ticket person painstakingly checking our IDs. Coach was not happy about our predicament so he personally swung both sides of the gate open and motioned everybody in.

That was the first time I got to shake his hand as a gesture of appreciation.

Was in school at Tennessee when he played...should have had the heisman but then again so should Peyton. Johnny could play a good game of football and also a little bridge..he has a really nice wife. They dated a UT. Sorry to hear of his illness.we are all old enough to have some limitations.especially forgetting things.hope we make it to see the rise again of Tennessee football...I will never forgive CPF for what he did to CJM

Coach majors loves UT, Phil took the next step, CBJ wants to make us a contender year in and out. I think we need to put our faith in him he's got a plan for the future not the present . We need a someone who's building for the future and I think we got our man. Brick by Brick is for real.
