So how come with all the folks in and around Knoxville on here I've never seen anyone talk about Matt Woods before? Considering its where he's from, or at least based, I figured he would've gotten a mention in some of these music threads.

I just found this album and its great. Is this guy a well known commodity around Knoxville that I just missed somehow?

Kim Williams from Rogersville deserves a mention- 16 number one songs with total record sales of over 150 million. Written several for Garth Brooks, Joe Diffey, Randy Travis and Aaron Tippen plus others.

I like it when writers who clearly shouldn't be performing their own music use their talents the correct way. A lot of people dislike singers who don't write their own music, but I find that to be very selfish. If a person is a good vocalist, I'd rather they perform someone else's great music than their own crappy attempt.

Have always disagreed with this take, to a certain extent. There are songs out there that most definitely should be handled by a good vocalist. But there are plenty of songs, the vast majority of those sung by people mentioned in this thread, that don't need an amazing vocalist singing it to be effective. For those songs, I'll take the person who can most successfully convey the emotion or motivation for the song. Nine times out of ten, I think that will be the songwriter.

Most of the names in this thread will never be confused with great vocalists.

The idea that a professional performer can't convey emotions is humorous.
If you're a good vocalist, go for it. If you're a bad vocalist, know your role and shut your damn mouth.

Looks like a Steve Earle wannabe to me. Speaking of Steve Earle, he is one of the best.

No. No. No. He is nothing like Steve Earle. Im a big fan of Steve Earle too, but Corey Smith is unlike any other. He has his own style that cant be compared to anyone.

i actually agree with you...if you're talking about disposible pop. if it has any artistic value i have no problem with a bad singer performing their own stuff. they shoudn't be pigeonholed.

They're 100% to blame for robbing the world of a well-performed song

Nick Lowe is at or near the top for me. His most famous are What's So Funny bout Peace Love and Understanding, Cruel to Be Kind and I knew the Bride (when she used to RocknRoll) but just about every song he's done (and continues to do) is great writing.

Here's a great solo performance (4 songs)
