I like it when writers who clearly shouldn't be performing their own music use their talents the correct way. A lot of people dislike singers who don't write their own music, but I find that to be very selfish. If a person is a good vocalist, I'd rather they perform someone else's great music than their own crappy attempt.

Have always disagreed with this take, to a certain extent. There are songs out there that most definitely should be handled by a good vocalist. But there are plenty of songs, the vast majority of those sung by people mentioned in this thread, that don't need an amazing vocalist singing it to be effective. For those songs, I'll take the person who can most successfully convey the emotion or motivation for the song. Nine times out of ten, I think that will be the songwriter.
Most of the names in this thread will never be confused with great vocalists.
