Situation in Venezuela

Venezuela failed because of a corrupt President who although elected ran the government like a dictatorship. He placed incompetent friends and supporters in every important position. The entire economy was propped up by high oil prices and they were a leading exporter. The price dropped and the country failed.

Denmark, Finland, Canada, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand, and Belgium are Socialist Democracies and the people in every one of them enjoy a higher standard than we do here.

IMO the US capitalistic system isn't working nearly as well as the socialist systems in the countries listed above.

Then hit the F'ing road Jack.....

So only predominately white socialist countries work. Got it. They have significantly less people too. Also, what higher standard do they enjoy?

"Democratic socialism purports to combine majority rule with state control of the means of production. However, the Scandinavian countries are not good examples of democratic socialism in action because they aren’t socialist."

"In response to Americans frequently referring to his country as socialist, the prime minister of Denmark recently remarked in a lecture at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government,

"I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy."

https://fee.org/articles/the-myth-of-scandinavian-socialism/

The US is more socialist than all the OECD countries except France. The US is about 30% socialist and that 30% coincidentally has us on the financial path to bankruptcy. The free market sector is the only thing that is saving our hides but it won't last forever.

When a citizenry makes a mistake at the ballot box, there are consequences. Venezuela is no exception. The sacrifice and death brought on by civil war CAN fertilize the soil for freedom. However, I have no faith the country will transform from the corruption common in most Latin American countries. Therefore, I don't care enough to fret about Venezuelans. I've thought more about them typing this post than I have in the previous 5 years combined.

Not sure many people are following the Venezuelan crisis but the regime has been experiencing months of daily street clashes between citizens wanting freedom and the increasingly authoritarian Maduro. For the first time during the crisis a Venezuelan military unit has defected but some reports are coming out the rebellion has been suppressed. Still once something happens like this it usually opens the floodgates for other similar actions. This is moving closer and closer to civil war which really have implications for the region and the US.

New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland rank higher on the economic freedom index than us. Denmark is one spot behind us and the Netherlands is 6 spots back. Not exactly "socialist", especially relative to us, now are they?

New Zealand and Ireland, are tiny, both have a smaller population than Metro Atlanta. Denmark is also smaller than Atlanta. New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland all have a big brother watching out for them. meaning they have to spend less money on self defense than some of the others. None of them have a world leading role (right or wrong of us having it).

you are being intellectually dishonest to compare the US to any of them.

and not sure what your point on bringing up countries that are worse than us on a rather vague scale. Meaning that a lot of the things that "economic freedom" looks at aren't particularly relevant, and as far as most of America goes, we aren't "missing out" on.

What do you think my point is? "Worse" than us? In what way? "Missing out"...are you quoting me? Vague scale? You can go look at the Heritage Foundation's (a very conservative think tank) methodology.

Why is it people from those nations are trying to immigrate here and people from the US aren't flocking there?

Most curious...

I'll stick around a bit longer. Bernie's ideas are catching hold. There may be hope for us yet.

Bernie is an idealistic, lost-touch-with-reality, buffoon. If he wasn't a politician he'd probably still be living in his mom's basement.

Communists and socialists like him have no idea how the world works and have no idea of human nature, what incentivizes people. They believe in fairy tales, and fairy tales that have never worked.

Never noticed we were being overrun by Norwegians.

According to Wiki, we average about 1,100 Norwegians a year immigrating here based on a 2010 study.

Total number of US ex-pats living in Norway? 8,500 give or take.

Total.
