Warning - This is a long read:
The wife and I discontinued HBOMax due to LBGT scenes in some of their movies and shows. Peacemaker, featuring John Cena for one. But the backbreaker for us was the gay characters in Dr. Who. See, we were excited about their finally having a female Doctor. Until her gal pal sidekick turned out to be a lesbian. Further, there was a romance between a male astronaut and a male cop. I did send a letter asking if they could include a rating similar to PG, PG-13 etc, but maybe make it LG or just G. So folks who didn't want to watch LBGT content could avoid it. After a month, we heard nothing. Bye-bye.
We did the same with Netflix, especially when their children show, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous in season two presented two characters as lesbians. I was ready to vamos, but ole Shirley lamented missing shows, mostly Asian and Indian because they frequently lacked the cussing and gross gore seen in western TV shows and movies. So recently, on the Netflix chat feature, I explained how we were canceling after 10yrs as customers and why. Thirty to forty minutes into chat, I got this. They asked me to hold and give them time to copy and paste EVERYTHING I said. Email copies to billing, the folks who select their viewing media, their CEO, and marketing department. AND, print for follow up mailing to the same. And, assign, I think it was two people to raise the issue at some meeting due toward the end of this month.
What might have been the tipping point? I advised them we had a trial subscription with Disney. I noticed they had in their category listing atop the selection page LBGT. Which meant customers who do NOT want to see such content know which media to avoid. This is what Netflix hadn't bothered to respond to when I wrote a letter suggesting this and NEVER got a reply. That as a result, wife and I were opting out. Think it lit a fire under their arse, we'll see. So it appears, the despised Disney did at least one thing right. This LBGT content is showing up in more and more viewing content, I think vendors will start giving customers the option of bypassing it instead of cramming it down our throats. Often when one Big Boy bucks a trend, the others follow suit. We'll see.
