Snakes

My wife's friend sent this pic to us from their ranch in OKC.

My wife and I were in the driveway of our new home last weekend and this huge black snake slithered across it. I mentioned it to my neighbor and he said the snake has been around a while. I've seen it since then in and out of the mangroves.

I hate snakes but I know those snakes keep bad things away. The good news is there is a warning of a snake being in the area...if you see the little lizards (which are everywhere) seek higher ground, you know there's a snake around.
Have you started seeing any tegus yet? I hear it’s open season on them.

You sure it’s not the brown water snake? I attached a picture of one. They look very similar to copperheads.
They are very similar and nearly stepped on one last summer. They’re one of the rare non-venomous snakes that have the heavy body like the vipers do. I freaked at first as it startled me, but then I looked at it more closely and realized it wasn’t a copperhead. When I got home I had to google it.
As a kid one of my favorite books was one called Reptiles and Amphibians..... it had a page for each snake and etc., with an illustration of them and a map that showed their range. I’d like to find a copy just for old times sake.

I’ve had this book for over 20 years. I have only ran across one LIVE venomous snake in the wild and it was a huge timber rattler when I was stationed at Ft Stewart. I’ve seen quite a few copperheads ran over though just none alive.

Kids ran across a garter snake in the yard today. They were pumped. It slithered into a hole under the fence.

I’ve probably run across more venomous snakes than non-venomous snakes in the wild. Course, I used to work at a nature preserve, nature center (in Texas) and the National Park Service here.

I have the pocket guide of this one, has to be 30 years old. My kids use it now. I spent a lot of time actively looking for snakes, salamanders, turtles, lizards, etc. and have only seen one venomous snake in the wild.
