I played in a bowl game against York Institute and before some wisecracker asks, no, Seargeant York was not on their team.

Cool. Which one? I know the team played in the Industrial Bowl a few times. I played in the Chestnut Bowl in White House.

Unfortunately I didn't get to meet the Sergeant. He died before I was born. I did know Miss Gracie, Andrew, and George very well. I used to hunt rabbits in Miss Gracie's back yard. And she raised some big ol' sweet strawberries.

That’s just too cool! Great story! Had a friend who had a Tennessee history teacher back in the late 60s who said she and her family visited them on a whim one day. Said there probably were couple of dozen people there visiting …and it came lunchtime and Sergeant made them all sit down at this huge long table and have lunch. They tried to talk him out of it, but he said any guest at his home was not gonna leave before they had a meal.!!! Can you imagine sitting down to a meal with a TRUE AMERICAN HERO?
